New guy from Jersey
Hey ya'll!
I'm new to the site and have big plans for my truck. Unfortunatly, shes not a Cummins. Not yet at least. Long story short is I plan on converting my old 6.5L turbo diesel to a 5.9 cummins. I specialize in the 6.5 but when it comes to the Cummins I don't know enough.
I'm aware of some of the various "swap" sites out there but I find that a site dedicated solely to the engine a vehicle will help me really get this thing to work.
Of course I could go out and just BUY a CTD, but that wouldn't have the uniqueness of my project. My 6.5 for those unaware of this diesel is very limited. A weak block, sensetive crankshaft and injection pump, and a poorly mounted fuel solenoid driver common to failure prevents me from doing much of anything. (plus its to quiet). Essentially, I want to hit the ground running when I begin the project, and when I come to the finish line, I want this truck to be something like never before.
Here are a few pictures:
I look forward to talkin to many of ya and hope I can be able to share my knowledge as well as learn here.
Reguards,
Jamie

I was reading through on the NJ chapter. I like how there is a group dedicated to each state on here VS a group of people here and there. Might not go to any of the meets till that Cummins is in place though...
Not quite sure yet. Bigges thing right now(as it is for just about everybody) is money. I want to at least have the block by the end of the summer. This way I can begin tearing it down and working it up. I'm shooting for roughly 700hp min. Or at least I can hope.
I'm hoping to pull of a 5.9 24V p-pump.

If you're not too far from the Delaware river, make sure you keep an eye on the PA events too. mikmaze is a regular at the Eastern PA gtg's. Don't feel like you have to have a Cummins to be welcome at a local event - often an "other" diesel powered vehicle draws more interest than "just another Dodge."
I don't blame you for wanting to get rid of that time bomb of a motor. I had a '95 Suburban with a 6.5 for a while before I got bit by the Benz bug. When it ran right it was an OK truck, but the ol' Dodge had twice the power and STILL got 4 mpg more.

EXACTLY. Don't get me wrong. I like my 6.5(Though I don't think that will last more than a week once the Cummins is in and I realize how far behind the powercurve I was) Its a decent engine, but really nothing more. Only thing I don't like on the truck itself is how low it sits to the ground and the fact that its 2 wheel drive. But those are both fixable.
Delaware River is roughly an hour and a half from me so thats not all that bad. Depending on where in PA the meets are I may go to them. It'll help to get a look at some of the mods and workings on them.

Welcome to the website and good luck on your project. I would recommend contacting DTR Member stock600 (Ryan Tucker.) He has a Chevy Chassis with a Cummins 5.9 and can probably give you some good info. Go to our MEMBERS LIST to get his contact info.

Thanks guys. This past week I've been a bit bouncy back and forth between what motor to go with. Either the HPCR(I found the thread from 5.9Excursion with his project) or do a 24V P pump conversion. So thanks MikMaze on the referal but thats a 12V.
Luckily, I just started a new job and pay/income will be MUCH better so I can get this thing rolling. Essentially anything with a 24V thats clean from nose to front door. After that it could have blown up for all I care.

What can a p-pumped 24 valve do that a 12 valve can't? I can understand wanting the flexibility and power of a CR motor, but if you plan on going with a stupid pump it doesn't really matter how many valves the engine has.

I actually just found a rather large thread reguarding a conversion done on here. I'm not so sure I'm going to be a doing a P Pump conversion now. I don't quite think it would be worth it.
I'm really liking the idea of getting an HPCR more and more... All the power I would ever need without having the "stupid" pump as people seem to call it.
Sounds stupid enough but believe it or not the only reason I didn't want to go with the HPCR in the first place was because I didn't think it was loud enough.(Yeah I know, Stupid). But after standing next to a bubby of mines HPCR Cummins its not nearly as bad as I seem to have presummed it to be. Once again, stupid.
Looks like that basically sets that into place. dimmensional is the HPCR similar to the 12V yes?

THEORETICALLY,
I could get an HPCR donor truck with all the electronics, find an ECM for that style truck/engine to remove the transmission and after parts from the equation, then use a standalone tranny controller to operate it correct?
Just juggling idea's right now really.
