Just got my engine replaced last week and took it on its maiden voyage with 9000# 5th wheel. Very cool at 32*, snow, slush and rain, my diprocol tranny gauge starts reading very high....280*+ at one point. No apparent changes in the way the tranny felt, checked the fluid, it was good, and dipstick was only warm to touch.

I'm assuming it is the gauge, or the temp sensor? If it were really that hot wouldn't the dipstick be very hot as well? Tranny oil looked fine and didn't appear burnt.

Any comments would be appreciated.

where is your temp probe located? feel the trans pan and if you cant keep your hand on it you may have issues! mine is warm but not extremely hot

I had the exact same problem on my 2000 dodge (gauge, not engine). Check the ground on the tranny gauge. Mine was disconnected from when they replaced the heater core and it read VERY high, yet I could put my hand on the pan. Actually I would check all the wiring, just to be sure.

I have a Diprocol trans temp gauge. I can assure you they are finnicky. Make sure you also have a clean connection at the sender. I used some dielectric grease on it. Also be careful to keep that wire away from noisy electric lines.

I don't thank pulling a fifth wheel with a new eng is a good way to brake one in!!!

That's the only real way to break in a NEW engine. Pull your trailer to the dealer, trade in the old truck, hook up the trailer to the NEW truck and head accross country. That's what a warranty is for.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you have to replace the motor. My 2005 and I knew of 3 others here locally that dusted the motors. 2 lost the motors. All had stock filter setups. Dealer told me that Chrysler was aware of the filter boxes having sealing problems in some of the 2005's. Cleaned my intake, turbo, etc. and wanted to monitor. I didn't want the risk however and traded before a 100,000.

Honestly, don't know for sure what took it out. Cummins mechanic seems to think poor fuel filtration, and a poor design that doesn't allow enough cooling at times and you melt here down.

I've been told by many reliable sources that the best way to break them in is load them up and run them hard. Guess time will tell.
