New engine(my dime), black smoke? Good or bad. Please help. Very frustrated!
I just had to replace my engine on 05 DTR, BUT, it smoke black smoke on start up, and when ever you give it fuel it blows black smoke for a few seconds, and then clears up. Doesn't matter if I am in tow, or on the highway, or at idle, as soon as you give it fuel I get the puff and stream of black smoke.
I just spent $9000 getting this dam thing up and running, I spoke with cummins mechanic that put the engine in, and he says it shouldn't smoke like that. He said maybe it needs to be reflashed?
At this point, if I didn't need a diesel, there is no way in this world I'd ever own one, I absolutely HATE it. Too much cost and you can't get a straight answer from anyone about what is normal and what is not. Way to finicky and too easy to cause damage.
At least with a gasser, you ABSOLUTELY know that if if is blowing any smoke at all, something is wrong with it. Any help woulf be greatly appreciated.

PS...Had a new set of injectors put in with the new longblock.

black on diesel is too much fuel. injector pump mechanical adjustment cuts back too raw fuel amount. I am NOT one of the go fast electrical add on mechanics though... simple stuff fer me! simple answer from me.

Is the turbo new?
Do you have any air leaks in the turbo plumbing?
You can make a test kit pretty simple from a hardware store. Two pvc solid end caps. Thread a air chuck into one of the caps. Pressurize to 35 psi and check for leaks in the air cooler and tubing.
Always check for air leaks anytime you tear into the engine or turbo system. This will always cause an initial black smoke condition.
Next have the injectors and fuel system checked at the dealer.
Did you adjust the valves or were they already done?

If he didnt he knows better.
