New to diesels

Hi all,
I understand you are supposed to idle the engine for a few minutes before shutting down....is that correct and why ?
thanks,
Joe

Hi, Joe, welcome to the DTR.

Yes, you should idle the motor depending on the load you had on it.

If you have an EGT gauge, you can wait until it is below 350* to shut down. If you don't, there is a guide in the owners manual that tells you how long to wait depending on what you were doing.

By letting the EGT's cool off, you reduce the chance the oil coking in the turbo and gumming the oil path up.

From Page 215, chapter 5 of the owners manual...

Idle the engine a few minutes before routine shutdown.
After full load operation, idle the engine 3 to 5 minutes
before shutting it down. This idle period will allow the
lubricating oil and coolant to carry excess heat away from
the combustion chamber, bearings, internal components,
and turbocharger. This is especially important for turbocharged,
charge air cooled engines, like your Turbo Ram.

It would also help to know what year truck and the mods you have... fill your sig out so we know.
