new to diesels need advice
Thinking about buying a 97 dually with auto tranny from second owner. Truck has 312,000 on it, He said he used it for towing a 32ft 5th wheel camper. what do you guys think the rig is worth? It has the famous dodge hood and top paint issues but no body damage, tires are about 50%, have not drove it yet, interior in good shape other than normal wear, am going to use the truck for daily driver and towing 21ft bass boat around the southeast. To many miles? Any way to tell if KDP has been addressed. Any thing else I need to look at in your suggestions? Thanks everyone.

Is it 2wd or 4wd? Regular or club cab? Do you know the second owner and if so how many miles did he put on it? If you have any previous history, I would not be afraid of the miles if the price is right. I bought a 96 3500 4wd from someone I knew that had 297K on it... didn't start bombing it until about 315k... sold it with eactly 399k(regretfully)... still running fine with over 550k on it now. I am not the most mechanical on this site, but the only way I know to check KDP is to either ask or take a look. I would definitely start putting aside for tranny work if I were buying it though... I hope that helps-

I wouldnt be worried too much about the miles if it has been well maintained, one of my buddies has a 94' that just hit 350k and I plan on running mine to over 400k+ before I start to look for another truck. Check out the front end, if its a 4wd theres alot of expensive parts up there that could be wore out, also the tranny could cost you alot of cash, find out when it was replaced. As far as a fair price goes it depends on if its a 2wd or 4wd, ext cab or reg cab, what part of the country you live in, amount of rust if any, etc. My friend paid $7k for his 94' 2500 and it had 340k on it then, I thought that was a little high for it but if its a well maintained truck and its what you want go for it, you cant go wrong with a 12 valve. Good Luck
