Smile New Diesel Owner need some help!

Guys, need some help I have a 05 2500 and was wondering how often do you use Stanadyne? Every tank full? Just ordered some the truck has 6000 miles to date and have run no additives so far. Do you add it to an emptty tank then fill her or after?

Also it seems that after I start my truck on a 40 degree morning I watch the volt gauge fluxuate some until I start driving it is that normal? I wait for the light to go out before starting. Another concern I have is from reading the forum about injector problem is this caused by letting the engine idle to long and how much is considered "too much." Another question I have is when should I start using the block heater with the colder months upon us I would like to get ready. They also say that you have to WORK the truck does this mean that i'll have an injetor problem if I don't tow with it? I use my truck to haul my race car trailer and won't be towing with it in the winter is that bad? One more question in the winter do you let your truck run for a few minutes before driving or is it OK to start driving without driving hard. I'm a new diesel owner and just don't want to hurt my Baby. Sorry for all of the questions but I figure I can get my answers here!!! Thank in advance for your help.

I could be wrong, but I believe that the reason why your volt meter is moving is because your grid heater is coming on and off. This happens on my truck everytime I start it when it is cold. As far as the additive I have only heard of people adding it every 10 or 15 thousand miles.

The alt. gauge fluxuating is normal, add additive before you fill up, let it warm a few seconds and go.

Some people use a fuel additive every tank, I use it every other. Many people run their trucks empty 99.99% of the time and do not tow anything ( I have never towed and have 40k on mine, never had a problem) . The general concesus is that long periods of idling is not the greatest thing for your vehicle. As for cold mornings, your cummins will warm up alot faster if you drive it, I idle between 5- 30 seconds then drive off slowly for another minute. Hope this helps

Here is what I have been told and it makes a ton of sense to me. Why warm up your engine when the rest of the truck is cold? In other words, if you warm up your engine and run it like a scolded dog your tranny, transfer case and differentials are going to pay the price!

Start the engine let it idle for a couple of seconds until you build oil pressure and then blip the throttle of few times and drive off gently until your whole truck is warmed up. Then drive it normally!

Regarding your block heater, you only NEED to use that if it gets really, really cold. I plug mine in the during the winter, but only because warm up is so easy in the morning. If you can't plug it in, it's no big deal as long as you have blended fuel if it's really cold or some additive. I've started mine on mornings as low as -5 degress without the use of a block heater with no problem. (blended, or winterized fuel of course). I wouldn't try that too often though myself. If it gets that cold, just plug it in.

- one tip, if you plug it in at night - which I do when it drops below about 40 deg. F - turn your defroster on, you will have defrosted windows in the morning.
