The new 50 state H.O is coming.....

While talking to a fleet sales rep this morning he let on that the new 50 state H.O. is indeed a reality! According to him they should start hitting dealers around Feburary.I believe he said they could be ordered around Jan 1st.This is great news for us who were forced to purchase the S.O. due to our locations.

Depends how nasty the egr system turns out to be. On TDI's it involved a 6 hour intake cleaning every 50-60k if you wanted to keep it running in tip top shape. If you happen to be unlucky enough to live in one of the **** states that only gets SO's now at this point, I feel for you!

Yea,decisions, decisions, take the $4,500 off on a '03 S.O or wait for the '04@ H.O with the EGR.Not to mention the tripled car reg tax here in California. This decision will require a lot of head scratching.

That stinks. If I were in your shoes, I'd try to buy a HO out of state and somehow transfer it in. Buy it in your relatives name and put some miles on it or something and then transfer it..

Re:The new 50 state H.O is coming.....

that does make it more complicated if you need it RIGHT NOW... Ahh I dunno, when there's a will theres a way!

Also there is a chance this worry will all be for nothing...and the EGR engine might be a good one.... I just know in the past EGR systems have been dirty messes. On the flipside, my MB has EGR, although it's dialed to an absolute minimum....and has no clogging probs...

For the write off:

Have your dad lease the truck from DC. Have him lease it to you at the same payment he pays. He will have "income" from you (equal to the lease payments) which will be off set by his costs (the same value lease payments to DC), making the transaction "revenue neutral" for him and giving you your write off. When you are ready (and the truck is "used" enough to get by your local regulations) have the lease assigned by DC from you dad to your company, move the registration to CA and you get where you want to go (right?).

The lease payments should be able to be written off each month against company income, while a truck purchase usually entails a depreciation factor which in many cases is less than the annual lease payments. You should check with your accountant.

The only problem might be insurance coverage. In Canada, a vehicle must be registered and insured in the province it is being operated in (if it will be operated for more than 6 months). Best to make sure you meet the registration requirements of your state if it affects insurance coverage.

If you don't have the correct insurance coverage, getting an '04 with EGR will seem like a dream compared to the hole you might have to dig yourself out of financially if you have an accident and don't have proper coverage.

Re:The new 50 state H.O is coming.....

Well of course the 50 state HO is a reality. thats just another dealer flapping his little sales lips to impress you with something we already know.

and what if Cummins/DC produces a big suprise and delivers the HO without EGR? I did hear a rustle in the leaves the other day...

Even if they do this without EGR, however, the 2004.0 trucks will not be subject to the same emmisions regs as the 2004.5, (that is, EGR or not). One possibility is post-cumbustion treatment, which is basically a CAT on steroids. and no matter what they do, the ECM is going to be tightly coupled to that emmisions performance, such that (my opinion) the fueling boxes will probably be considered "tampering" with emissions. just my conjecture though.

And if they DO deliver the new HOs with EGR, the sky probably won't fall in. you'll just have to change your oil more often. Man, I've got 1600 miles on my truck now, and the oil looks as good as new. these things are amazing.

Re:The new 50 state H.O is coming.....

Dumb question #1 (from me anyway) tonight: When the EGR HO's are offered to CA, ME & MA, will the non EGR HO's still be available elsewhere or will all HO's have the EGR?

Starting Jan '04, Federal light truck diesel emissions standards will be the same as California's. So your guess is as good as mine.

Re:The new 50 state H.O is coming.....

Mercedes has invented/developed a new type of catalyst that drastically reduces emissions, and allows their new vehicles to meet 2007 ULEV standards. Maybe dodge will borrow some of that technology and forego the egr idea. While EGR will cause shorter drain intervals, it also clogs the crap out of your intake, at least on some current models with EGR. We'll have to wait and see. I know I'm glad I'm getting an early 04!!!!

Re:The new 50 state H.O is coming.....

Things are going to get worse when it to emision std.s.
I saw a while back where the epa set future reqirements ( I beleive 2005) 5x's tighter than current std.s :'( For diesels only. Automobile stds were abouts twice as tight.

Re:The new 50 state H.O is coming.....

2006 brings ultra low sulfur diesel, and its NOT a bad thing. It will be similarly priced, run the same, and just have 90% less smoke etc.. Very good for those with respiratory illnesses and will allow us to get some of those cool european diesels that currently can't meet our emissions standards.

EGR will stink until 2006.
