This probably ranks up there as one of the dumbest questions yet, but I am just so anxios to get my new tires and wheels tommorrow that I had to ask. how much bigger is 285/60/18 compared to the factory rims and tires I mean are the new tires going to be pizza cutters like I got now.

i think that is factory size or very close. they will look even smaller with the 18 inch rims. did you want them bigger or smaller? i dont understand what the pizza cutter reference means...

I want them bigger but not a whole lot if there just a little taller and wider that will be great factory is 245/70/17 I believe and the pizza cutter comment is means real skinny

Oh, my factory tires were 285s, but that was on a TRX4 package. You will be happy then and they will be fatter for sure.

Here's how you figure tire size.

285 = 285mm wide
60 = the sidewall is 60% of the width - thus, 171mm (that's each sidewall so X 2)
18 = obviously the rim diameter

So you have width automatically, and for height you convert the sidewall mm into inches (in this case 13.42) and add it to the rim diameter for your total height (in this case 31.42 inches)

HOWEVER - some manufacturers don't rate the size as actual as the tire comes out of the mold. So like the brand of 315/75/17s I have are slightly taller than some of the other brands. But all should be at least close to the number.

The biggest visual difference over stock will now be a lower profile tire since you went up in rim size but kept almost the same size tire.

I personally dont like the look of low profile tires on a 4x4 diesel but hey its your truck....

285's on 17's look nice as do 295's but never seen 285/60/18

I have 18's and wouldnt want anything less then a 34-35" because it will get that low profile look.

Hopefully you got MT's to improve the look.

alot of guys run a 325/60/18 tires on a 10" wheel. thats no pizza cutter its a pretty big tire. the 285 isnt much bigger than the stock tires

thanks guys for all the responses I think ill be happy with them because I was wanting to get away from stock but not go much bigger. I like the look that it has now with the factorys just need a little bigger and more aggressive tire. I get stuck in wet grass as it is now.

two ways to figure out tire size that i know of.

one is on discount tires web site
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos

and the other is a little math problem but is good if you cant get to the web.
height x width x 2 / 2550 + wheel diameter = tire height in inches

265 x 70 x 2 / 2550 + 17 = 31.549 stock tire size

285 x 60 x 2 / 2550 + 18 = 31.411 tire looking at

there is another way to figure out width but i cant remember exactly how to do it. maybe someone else knows.

You definately would want to go with the 285/65/18s, I put some nitto dune grapplers on my truck in that size and am pleased. Any thing smaller would look redicously too small.
