need timing help asap PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My bro and I have been messing with the timing for 2 days now and we are still having troubles.
1.Found TDC by drop valve method.
2. Dial indicator says that I have 3.7mm of lift (timing must have slipped).
3.Pulled timing gear and followed FSM and dodges tsb instructions, and cant seem to get the gear to move enough.

We went through all of the instructions and steps and when I put it back together and checked the lift it was still at 3.7mm.???

Need some help.

Something doesn't sound right. I'll assume you marked the pulley with TDC. Then get the pump to the lift reading you want. Next pop the gear loose and then turn the engine back so that your past TDC. Next turn the engine back to TDC. The reason for turning it back farther than TDC and then returning to TDC is to remove the lash in the gears. Clean the pump shaft with a good cleaner - I used a brake cleaner as it completly evaporates. Good luck.
