Need to swap out my hydroboost

Has anyone done this?

I have come to the conclusion that mine is shot so I'm planning on picking up a rebuilt one at napa or carquest etc..

How hard is to do?

Do I need any special tools?

Will I need to bleed the system?

Thanks guys

Doug

it's a very straight-forward deal...

remove the old one, install the new one.

The only rub is you'll want to put the front of the truck on jackstands... fill the steering resovoir, fire the truck up, turn the wheel from lock to lock, top off the fluid, turn it from lock to lock, etc. till it's all topped off. There will be a lot of bubbles in the resovoir... turn the truck off and let it sit for a while... go inside, have a drink, check your email, etc. go back out and check the fluid level, if it's low, top it off, fire the truck up and go lock to lock 5-6 times or so and watch for bubbles... if there are bubbles in the resovoir, kill the truck and let them settle.

repeat this untill the fluid is bubble-free

this may sound like overkill, but it'll prevent you from damaging the pump or the brake booster at all.

I thought they had a funky shaped nut ...It looked like a hex nut with the ends rounded off ...
That was for the saginaw hydro unit ... mine was like a 12" deep socket for taking those nuts off .

Its easy.

Check out vancopbs.com before you buy one at a parts store. Talk to Van or Eddie.

Cool thanks for the info guys. I feel much better about doing it now.

I'll check out that site Bobcat. I thought about sending you a pm.. I thought I read somewhere that you've swapped yours out a few times.
