Need opinion on Extra power
I have a 2004 SO CTD. Wanted an HO but got a deal on a mildly used SO. I have the 48RE Trans. I only tow occasionally, either a 14' utility trailer with a couple thousand pounds or a 28' TT at about #6000.
My question is what would you recommend as a mild upgrade (ie Banks, BullyDog, Edge etc) Looking to get up to HO range maybe a little more.
Another question is with a mild upgrade and light towing would I really need to add gauges? Not that I don't want too but I am not sure that my mechanical level is high enough to install an EGT without leaving something behind to ruin the turbo (shavings etc.)
I really appreciate the help as I am relatively new diesel owner.

If you install any chip, you really should get the gauges first. You could start by upgrading the exhaust to the Banks Monster, a Scotty RA3 and a Turbo Air Guide (TAG), before deciding if you want the extra power of the chip and gauges. You will need these improvements to get he most out of a chip such as the Banks Six-Gun anyway so it is money well spent.

As far as boxes, I have been very happy with my volumizer. There are only a couple of other guy's on here with this box, but I have been amazed at the power and reliability of the thing. I got 20K on since I installed the box and no codes or other problems. With any box though you will need the EGT gauge.

I would recommend pyro and trans temp just because you plan to tow edge ez would probably be what your looking for has good power capability but you can run it at lower setting. Trans temp because heat is what will kill auto trans all auto's get warm during towing
