Need Info

I currently have a 93 Dodge diesel dually.

I am in the market to move up to a 2001, 2002 or 2003.

Need input as to which year has had the least problems with regard to engine, trans ,etc

Has there been a change in the engine and/or transmission in the 3 different years of trucks?

Would appreciate any input regarding this. Thanks

I know I will get a lot of bashing for this, but when I went looking for a truck, it was either gonna be a 97 or 98 with a 12v or a 03 up with the common rail. I won't even consider owning a VP truck! I'm not in to dropping over a grand every time it leaves me on the side of the road! I ended up with an 03, and am SOOOOOO glad! Love it ! 145k on the ticker and going strong!

I think you would be better to find a 03 HO. versus the older turcks. Like vzdude said that VP pump gets costly to fix. Don't get me wrong the 03 has lift pump issues on mod trucks, but a Glacier system will fix that. With an 03 or 04 you will get 305HP and 555TQ. If you step up to the 04.5 you get 325 and 600. Every truck is going to have some issues, but the main thing to look for is previous owner maintenace and the body style you like.

I agree with them. Go with the common rail versions. I'll go one better they didn't mention. Find '03-04 and make sure it has the 48RE transmission if you want an auto. It is much improved over the old 47re.

As far as the changes you ask for-- the 3rd gens ('03 and up) are the common rail that eliminated the VP pump for the CP3. That alone is a huge improvement. Along with the ecm upgrade and a lot of other stuff. It is a world of difference, really, from the '02 to the '03 besides the body and interior. Entirely different drivetrain, suspension etc. And the trans upgrade too although you have to be careful as early 03's came with 47re's before they swapped to the 48re. I don't know about manuals though.

Go with the 03-04... you'll be happier.
