Need Help

When you plug in your truck, What is that heater called and can they go out.

engine block heater- heats your coolant. i am sure they can fail- i would remove it and check the cord for damage,etc. but before you remove it, i would check it up on the engine, to make sure the connection is tight and did not "work" itself loose- if i remember correctly, it screws in. you can remove the whole unit in a matter of minutes.

Does it heat the coolant or the block?

It heats the coolant, which basically, heats the block.

They DO fail. The original one on my 92 lasted 10 years, changed it out and the new one quit in a month, next one 3 days, next one 5 monthes, next one a year, and last one bout 4 years so far and still good. The first and last one I put in I had to buy cause cummins only warranties them for 1 year.

Dang, must be cold in Dallas... I don't even know where my block heater cord is or where it plugs in.
