need help!!! putting he351 on early 04

ok guys i got a stock turbo, exhaust manifold, and exhaust elbow from an 05 w/ 10,000 miles on the parts. i want to put this on my early 04 and need to know what i need to do to make it work. i tried searching for this but there's not enough info. i need pics please! what exactly needs to be done with the electronic wastegate? can i use the elbow that came w/ my edge j/a? i wouldn't think there is that much to do to make this work. anyone have a detailed write-up on this subject for the 03-04 trucks? thanks

The new exhaust elbow requires a 4 inch downpipe which your stock 2004 is 3.5 inches.
Both exhaust manifolds are identical but it's easier to remove the turbo & exhaust manifold as a unit.

The new turbo will have an electronic wastegate, ie. solenoid. I would remove it and try to adapt a traditional adjustable boost elbow.

Oil lines and intake air tube are identical. The oil drain line is a pain in the butt, bolt it to the turbo 1st.

Make sure you have a boost gauge. Put some oil in the turbo before you install the oil line.

I think that covers it... Joe

you can use the 03-04 exhaust elbow on the he351 the band clamp is the same diameter and the elbow is the same at the turbo mounting face. the difference is at you exhaust pipe where they reduced it to 3.5" not at the turbo exhaust housing side. if you want a 4" down pipe then change to the later 04.5 elbow but otherwise your existing elbow can be used

thread a brass reducer into the electronic WG port. block off the small hole that the WG hose currently comes from 1/8 npt plug and a tap work for that. put an adjustable boost elbow into the brass reducer you installed. route the hose to the WG and run it. everything else is pretty straight forward

Are you really going to gain that much for the work involved in the swap?

From the claims I have read it looks like 100-150* difference if the 4" elbow and downpipe are used. Will be able to confirm in a week or two.

swap is relatively painless. takes about an hour can be less for those who have done it before. the benefits are noticible even without the down pipe change. my 03 i netted me an extra window of power that cooled better while towing. not as good as my 62/12 but it gave middle ground between the smarty 4.11 on level 5 being able to max my EGt gauge to 1400 with some effort towing and level 7 pegging it even faster to the point where at WOT level 7 the truck could pull any hill witha trailer at 1250-1300 max egts. it then was able to support a van aken pressure box matched to the 4.11 program egt wise and have no issues. i have since upgraded to the 62/12 but found that 60/9 to be a good upgrade for the 03/04 trucks when you are on a budget.

TST sells a adjustable boost elbow kit for the 04.5 to 07's that would have everything you need...
