Need help with my 96 auto!

Truck is stock and has 177k. Here is the deal when, I first drive it in the morning after it shifts into second gear it wont go into third forever and starts surging bigtime like its cutting fuel or something. After a while it will go into thrid gear and then finally lock up the converter. After it does this once it will not do it again until the truck sit for a long time. Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on?? Like I said after it does it once the truck runs and drive perfectly normal???

sounds like your torque converter is draining back overnight.

hows your fluid level? remember, check it hot, level and in neutral with the parking brake on.

Try this, when you first start it up in the morning put it in neutral and with the brake on let it idle for a minute or so. Then drive it. If the problem goes away then it indicates the tranny oil is draining from the torque converter as mentioned before. There is at least one check valve (I think it is in tranny line) which if stuck open allow the tranny oil to drain. I'm not 100% sure where the oil is draining from but I think I was told the oil drains from the torque converter. The check valves are sometimes removed with tranny upgrades and the recommendation to idle is made to make sure oil is available through out the system.

a filter change could not hurt. If I remember right, the check ball is in that short flexable section of line comming off the cooler mounted under the air filter.

When you change the filter , also adjust the bands , I think Infidel may have in his gallery.
Check this .

I'd reccomend to anybody to take the oneway valve (ball/spring) out.
They can get screwed up and end up costing you big $$$$
