Need help making next step...

I have a 2001 with a K@N air filter and a Diablo Sport power puck. I have a code telling me the VP-44 is bad and I have the dead pedal problem. I do not have a fuel pressure gauge or any gauges for that matter. I am wondering if I should purchase a fuel pressure gauge or maybe a programmer with the gauges built in. If it is better to get a programmer, which one? This is a daily work truck for me and as much as I like to show off and have alot of power, I need GAS MILAGE more than anything and also reliability. I love my Cummins, but I am new to owning a diesel and not sure which programmer and mods would be best for my situation. I do haul at times, but not often, and alittle smoke to show off wouldn't hurt. I do have plans for an exaust but not sure if any are better than others. Any thoughts would be helpful.

I wouldn't own a Cummins without a fp gauge. Once the fuel lift pump goes bad, the vp has to pull fuel through it on its own. When the vp44 doesn't have proper flow of fuel [which also cools/lubricates the pump/electronics] It burns up. I would not just install a vp without a aftermarket fuel pump or fuel system. The choices of FP can range from $100-$800 or more. I like Fass & Airdog systems as they remove water from fuel & seperate air. If funds allow, the Airdog units are like $480-$550 depending on dealer. If funds are tight, A holley blue fuel pump is a good choice $110 at the local Advanced auto.

As mentioned without a FP gauge you have no way of knowing if you have LP issues..... If the LP goes bad the pump basically overheats and the electronics are normally the first to go. With your symptoms I would be highly suspect of the VP. If reliability is key I would get an Airdog pump (while the Holley pumps work long term reliability is not always good). Hook up a FP gauge so you can monitor pressure. Replace the VP with a unit from a certified Bosch rebuilder.

Do NOT get drawn into the hype some dealers spout on the superiority of their pumps. ALL pumps rebuild by a Bosch certified show use the same parts! Look for a fair price, good warranty, and someone you trust. Cheapest is not always the least expensive.

I am definately going to add a fuel pressure gauge. I ordered a three gauge pod and a set of gauges last night. I was wanting to add a programmer and maybe one that told all the same readings, but thought it wouldn't hurt if I had a gauge and also a programmer giving me readings when I add one later.
I also ordered a FASS system last night but I am not sure who has the best price on the IP. I have alo heard talk of a "big line kit", give me some infor on what that is and who caries a good price on it.
Anyone have an opinion on exhaust size, and muffler type? Gotta get that stock off of there.

Noone has any idea's? I ordered a J- hook today and still trying to find the best exhaust to buy. I also just started adding 2 cycle oil and diesel treatment today. I had no idea how much of a difference it would make. Really took some noise away and improved throttle responce. Still open for idea's on where to spend money next.

The fass will come with a big line kit. Did you get the pump with the filters or the other pump? If you don't plan on bombing it way out a 4" exhaust would be plenty.
