Well I'm being transferred back to the Gulf Of Mexico (was in Brazil offshore) to work offshore. That means I will be driving 500 miles or more a month to south La. to catch a helicopter. I dont want to leave my truck in a parking lot soaking up salt and risking flooding wioth the hurricanes. They move the trucks for us but you never know. I want somethng for 5000 or less. I'm leaning towards a toyota. Want a 4x4. I'd liek to find a dodge cummins. Is there anything in that price range that has some life left in it? What year models should I look at?

you can get a decent gasser 4x4 for 5g's easily. the cummins is obviously going to be hard to find with 4x4 for that, in shape to last you :/

I paid $3500 for a 1997 Dodge Ram extended cab 1500 4x4 Manual :/ I thought it was a fair price. Didnt buy it for myself anyways Kids.

From what I hear toyota makes a nice truck.

If you can find a Cummins in the 5k range it would be most likely a 2wd. My bro is in your shoes, I am helping him look, he is having a hard time finding a full size in good shape for under 5k. Most are 1500...

My wife has a 4Runner. Toyota does build a great truck if you decide you want to go that route.

Well, "cheap" and "reliable" for a 4x4 places in my mind an old Nissan or Toyota. If you want reliable, an old Toyota would definitely be the way to go. And a little 4wd Toyota would probably go more places than a Dodge Cummins.

If you look hard enough, though, you can get a good deal on a Cummins. Mine's two wheel drive, but I only paid $2,650 for it. Although I did spend years looking for mine, but it's plenty reliable so far...

I saw a mitsubishi mighty max 4x4 not too long ago, 2500 dollars would drive it off the lot, black, five speed, four wheel drive and four cylinder.. for a pitter patter mobile... not too bad... just not enough cash at time to get it....

found my 91 4x4 for $3500 with about 43k on the cummins. drove it home 600miles with no problem... paint is all faded but nothing more than a little surface rust in a few spots. they are out there, having the money ready to offer really helps if the seller is in a bind.

X's a zillion on a little toyota. You can find an 86-89 pick up or 4runner in nice shape for $3-4K. Find one with a four banger, they're easier to work on than that p.o.s 3.0 V6.
They are tough s.o.b's, easy to work on, and get decent gas milage too.

Ya, Do the lil toyota. I have chosen to buy em and fix them up and then sell them. I have sold probaly 15 in the past 6 years. They go like hot cakes. The 22r is a much better engine than the V6 3.slow. The v6 is nut less, and gets crapy gas milage. The 4 cyl is good for over 250k. The 5 speed is the way to go aswell. In 85 toyota switched from a sloid axel front end to IFS. The IFS makes for a better ride but isn't as nice off road. From 86-88 the bodies were the same and from 89-95 the bodies were the same. Every thing else was the same. The frames rotted out by the gas tank and on the other side check real good. Also the spair tire holder rusted up gotta cut them out.

I would go with a toyota But check the frame first. Coop

Back in '88 I had an '88 Toyota 4banger 5speed.

Go anywhere 22+ MPG miracle of modern Japanese quality.

I put a clutch in around 88K miles, brakes too I think.
Delivered pizza in it for 6 years as well as daily driver.
