Nasty Smell

I just got in my truck to start it and it slooowly cranked but started. I noticed

a burning smell from the engine compartment. I put two and two together and started checking the batteries.

When facing the truck the battery on the left by the air intake had smoke coming out of the top.(acid i assume)

Does any one know about batteries is it toast do i need to fill it with water
will i be able to even start it to go to work?

Usually after starting adn accelerating past 24mph the charging guage jumps up past 14 and now its under 14 and stays around 13 or 14

Possibility.

No sense in damaging the truck from spewing battery acid. Time to replace both batteries.

When replacing batteries should both always be changed at the same time, or is it because of whats going on with his batteries that he should?

Replace both batteries because as batteries age they charge and discharge differently. If different ages one battery will be robbing from another when charging and discharging. If I remember right a new battery will be almost 13 volts and an older battery will probably be around 12.5 volts and a worn out battery will be 12 volts. But all (3) would definitely discharge differently. FYI
