My NV5600 Conversion notes

Swapped from a 4500 to 5600.

Luckily the 5600 came with the belhousing, as nothing I read mentioned that the 5600 belhousing IS needed.
I already had a SB clutch so they just had to change the hub of the disc out to the 1 3/8 5600 spline. I used the 98 cross member in the stock location in the regular position as the 4500. The notes I read said turn it around and some said lower it an inch> I did not. A freind had his 01 5600 equipped truck here so I could measure driveline alignment. All I had to fabricate was two tabs on the rear trans mount due to hole misalignment. About 1 1/2 inches, I welded the tabs directly to the trans mounting plate that bolts directly to the rear trans mount, the rubber mount bolts to it. It appeared that you could just get the 5600 trans mount plate also, from looking at his rig. (I d guess a low cost piece). The notes about driveline lenghtening and shortening were correct at 5 1/2 inches.

My vacumm plug for the transfer case reached , just barely....the speedo wiring reached easily. No extensions needed. I lenghtened the 4x4 shifter rod about 4 inches, with 3/8's solid rod. Its easily adjustable as long as its long enough. Just cut and weld in the new peice closer to the transfer case so the adjuster has a smooth surface.

Make sure you find oil ahead of time....gl5 10-30 ....specail oil for the trans. amsoil mtf, or redline mtl, or oem stuff. oem quoted me 24$ a quart! (4.5 quarts are needed) I bought amsoil (8 quarts of mtf and 8 quarts of atf universal for about 100$). I plan on run the pto cover coolers which ad 1 quart a piece, thats why I bought 8 quarts) Mine should hold about 7 with the pto cover coolers .
The transfer case takes regular atf. Mine was topped off at 3 quarts even.

The shifter.....the 5 and 6 speed shifter are different! I taked with BD a couple days ago in person and was told , oh it should work......well it doesn t . I still used my 5 speed shifter though with fabrication. I had a t56 (gm 6 speed) here with the plastic (nylon) cup in it, which happen to fit snugly in a 18 mm 12 point socket. I cut the socket to lenght (chop saw) and it fit perfectly in the nv5600 shifter hole in the trans.. The t56 (gm) nylon happens to also fit the 4500 shifter end very nice. It worked perfectly, the troughs are very short, around 3-4 inches from 2-3 3-4 etc... I also cut off the top of the shifter rod and welded on a t56 (gm) end, which allowed me to use a large white t56 shifer ball, that even had the CORRECT pattern on top for the 5600. I can also switch back to the t56 leather rapped ball easy.

The exhuast hanger mount on the side of the trans moved back about 6-7 inches, I cut it off the exhuast and put it back on were it needed to be.

all done it was actually pretty easy, the only scary part is having all the weight up that high on a trans jack for a lift.....make sure you strap it on and be gentle moving it around when installing the trans.

Chris, did your 5600 have a nylon insert in it? That when inserted fit the 4500 shifter? I had about a 1 inch hole to fill......the 4500 shifter has about a 1/2 sorta ball on the end. The bolt pattern on the shifter mounting was the same.
