Is my injector pump toast?

Hello folks need some help.

IP has been idling low when it gets hot for a while now.

Today was driving down the road and realized I was going too slow....(DON'T THINK I WAS GOING TO SLOW NOW)so I punched it, and of course rolled the coal. The next thing that happened is it acted like it was out of fuel, and died.

I put fuel in it cracked several injectors, they had fuel cut the shut off solenoid wires still nothing. I had it towed home under the truck on the tow truck bed was lots of diesel fuel coming from the bottom of the IP!

I'm thinking the IP bit the dirt? Does anyone have any insight? If IP is gone what the going rate to get it fixed?

How hard is it to put a new pump in for someone with NO PATIENCE and minimal tools.

Thanks, Tony

Where is a good IP source?

Got a couple more questions

1. has anyone's MPG went down after a pump rebuild?

2. Wonder if I can keep my 3200 rpm spring, and cut fuel pin?

Thanks, Tony

It's doable under a shade tree. Reasonable amount of good tools a must. Got metrics? But the patience thing could be a problem. But be prepared that cummins will not honor any waranty on the new pump if it so much as scratched with a screw driver looking like it has been modified.

So you tested for fuel at the injectors...was it spraying or dribbling? Then you say you "cut" the wires to the FSS? If you did that then you will have no fuel at all. You need to run a jump wire direct from the battery to the FSS. If it doesn't start after that then remove the guts from the FSS and try it that way.

Price on a rebuild seems to depend on your area, and if you have a decent shop...you can trust...around. I'd maybe put a want ad on craigslist looking for a 1st Gen'er who knows his stuff and can rebuild one for you. With the problems a couple guys have had lately with "reputable" shops messing up their IP's I'd be a bit hesitant.
