My initial impressions...

...of my new South Bend Clutch.

Last week I finally got my clutch- a SBC 3600 12cb sprung hub dual disk with a diaphragm pressure plate. I have been wanting a double disk clutch for years, but a student budget limits the amount of cash available for wants. The install took forever (mostly by myself with a hand putting the tranny and crossmember back in), but was mostly trouble free.

So on to the clutch. I got the truck finished up last night and was filthy (truck had a major blowby issue until I changed the engine last winter, so there is plenty of oil under the truck), so while I cleaned up, I let my girlfriend's brother take the truck out for a drive. He wasn't there for the install, so he didn't see that it was a double disk. When he got back, he didn't believe that it was a double disk.

The truck shifts so smoothly, it feels just like a single. Pedal pressure is as light, if not lighter, than the Centerforce Dual Friction that I took out of it. The clutch also doesn't make a sound. There is no rattle whatsoever, clutch in or clutch out. Also, the clutch isn't really jumpy or grabby like the EEP DD clutches I have driven (granted, this is designed for a different application), it has very smooth engagement.

The only complaint I have is that the clutch is a hair slower to shift. To tell the truth, normal shifting is the same speed as the single. If you try to shift really fast, though, the shifter goes into neutral then seems to bind up for just a fraction of a second until it slips into the next gear. This isn't a big deal for me, and was expected, so I am not complaining as such.

Big thanks to Peter and crew at South Bend Clutch. I would reccomend this clutch to anyone and everyone. For the price difference between a good single, and this double disk, it is definitely worth the small price increase to step up.
