Is my fuel pump out? is it under warranty?

I think I lost my pump on my 2004.5. When I pulled in the driveway on Fri. the truck died. I waited a min. and it started back. I changed the fuel filter and it ran well in the driveway. This morning as I headed out I got 5 or so miles from home and it died. I could leave the key in the on position and it would run for a min. or so and die. I called the Chrysler help line and they sent a rollback and took it to the dealer. I think I have the 7/70 warranty. I think they are supposed to replace this fuel pump with an in the tank one. The truck has 47,000 miles. Does this sound like it is the pump to you guys? If so is this covered under warranty?
Thanks,
Mule

sounds like the lift pump my went out after the warranty period.
It was easy and inexpensive to replace I kept it stock since the first one lasted over 100,000 miles.

yep sounds like what mine did when it went out. i just bought the stock one from Geno's garage and put it on. easy is an overstatement, it took me 45 minutes from the time i opened the hood 'til the time i closed it. mine was out of warranty though so it was going to cost me over $1000 as quoted by the dealer. based on the length of time the first one lasted and the cost of the in-tank i can replace it back to stock for the next 50 years before i reach that price and since i'm currently 42.... $1000 man i almost fell over....

The Genos LP is less than $200. Very easy to replace. I was gonna get one of those for a spare but found a used one in good working condition for almost nothing. I keep it in my toolbag in the truck just in case......

Just got of the phone with Chrysler corperate after the dealer told me that the pump was not covered under the 7/70 or the 10/100 warranty. They confirmed that the pump was only covered for 3/36. (I didn't even know I had a 3/36 warranty component). The dealer wanted $750.00 to replace with an in tank unit. Chrysler corperate said they would pay $400.00 of that. I am going to just let them do it so I don't have to worry about it. The fine print on these warranties is a joke. They said the only reason they were paying for most of it was because I have bought 3 new dodge trucks over the last 10 years or so. Which means if this had been my 1st. Dodge I would have been out of luck. Is the in tank unit twice as good as the stock one I could have gotten from Geno's for $200.00? As is I could either pay Geno the 2 bills for the old style and install it myself or pay Chrysler 3 and a half for the in tank replacement.

I would do some more checking. This should be covered 100% at least under your 7/70 warranty (maybe a deductible). Do some searching. I think others have had this done under warranty. In Calif, I even think this is covered by the emissions warranty (but I could be wrong about that). Did you read for yourself where this is excluded from the power train warranty?

ON EDIT: This guy had his 04.5 covered with 80K miles. So, that means it may be covered under the Cummins warranty. Maybe Chrysler corp. doesn't know about that.

I thought 04.5 already had intank pumps. Are you sure it is an 04.5 or 04?

They replaced mine about six months ago with 83k+, did charge me $100.00
That was at Bluebonnet Dodge, New Braunfels, Tx. Had truck about 6 hrs.
No proublems since. Check with another dealer. The lift pump is a Cummins waranty 100k.

The 04.5 had the canister mounted pump.

If you are planning any performance mods, I would go with an aftermarket pump, but if you are keeping the truck stock, then go with the dealer's in tank replacement. (if you get it for 350.)

Don't over look the aftermarket stuff. Air Dog makes a nice pump, I have one, and like it a lot. Extra filtration, too.

I just read through the warranty details (go to dodge.com, owners, warranty, then select 2004 etc. which leads you to a PDF file which lists all the the warranty details). I was surprised to see the fuel pump omitted from the 7/70 and Cummins warranties. It does appear (sort of) in the Federal Emissions (5/100) warranty, ". . . fuel cap and tank assembly, pump, and fuel
lines." But, this probably has expired for an 04.5. The California Emission warranty explicitly covers it for 7/100.

7/70 Powertrain Warranty covers these parts and components
of your truck's powertrain:

Diesel Engine: cylinder block and all internal
parts; cylinder head assemblies; core plugs; fuel
injection pump and injectors; intake and exhaust
manifolds; oil pan; oil pump; timing gear drive
belts and/or chains and cover; turbocharger housing
and internal parts; valve covers; water pump and
housing; seals and gaskets for listed components
only.

Cummins Warranty:

cylinder block and all internal parts
• cylinder head assemblies
• core plugs
• fuel injection pump & injectors
• gaskets and seals for listed components
• intake and exhaust manifold
• oil pan
• oil pump
• timing gear drive belts and/or chains and cover
• turbocharger housing and internal parts
• valve covers
• water pump and housing

Federal Emissions Warranty (5/100):

• Air system controls;
• catalytic converter;
• evaporative-emission canister and controls;
• exhaust manifold;
• exhaust gas recirculation valve and control
system;
• exhaust pipes (between exhaust manifold and
catalyst);
• fuel cap and tank assembly, pump, and fuel
lines;
• ignition coil and ignition module;
• intake manifold;
• on-board diagnostic-system components;
• oxygen sensors;
• positive crankcase-ventilation (PCV) valve or
orifice;
• powertrain control module;
• secondary ignition wires;
• spark plugs;
• throttle body;
• transmission-control module;
• vacuum hoses, clamps, and fittings, as well as
tubing used for these components;
• vacuum, temperature, altitude, speed, time-
sensitive valves, sensors, and switches used in
these components and systems.
B. Parts Covered for 5 Years or 100,000 Miles
Diesel equipped heavy duty trucks, as described in 5.3
(A), have a separate diesel engine Emission Warranty
which covers the following items for 5 years or 100,000
miles. These limits are counted from the time when
your Basic Limited Warranty begins under 2.1 (E). The
covered parts are:
• exhaust manifold
• fuel injection system
• injector
• intake manifold, and
• turbocharger.

And, finally . . . California Emissions Warranty (also applies to a few other states) 7/100:

LONG-TERM EMISSION-RELATED PARTS:
Intake Manifold Turbocharger
Charge Air Cooler
Fuel System Oxidation Catalyst
Fuel Pump
Injectors
Electronic Control Module

yeah mine was out of warranty for mileage or at least i was told that. even though it was about 400 miles short of 100k. so rather than deal with the ******* dealership i just did it myself because in the time it would take me to argue with them i had the part ordered and installed and i needed my truck back up. i don't plan on any major engine mods any time soon. i may go with an aftermarket eventually but i went the easiest and fastest way to get my truck running this time.

I have a friend who also has a 2004-1/2, his pump went out a couple weeks ago, he's at 55K, they replaced it under warranty 7/70.

I had the dealership replace mine two months ago under the 7/70 warranty. At the time the in-tank retrofit fuel pumps were back-ordered, so they replaced it with one I ordered from Geno's.

Dodge corp. claimed it was not listed and not covered. The rep I delt with said she was really surprised it wasn't(so was I). This whole deal has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Is it worth the extra $150.00 to let them do it rather than replace one myself with a known problem part? How is the reliability record for the in tank replacement?
