my friend foung out the kdp isn't a myth
my friend bought a 98 12v about 3 month's ago, i told him to bring it over and let me tab his pin, but he didn't want to wait around 2 hours for me to do it. well he called me this weekend to tell me his timing gear cover is cracked and is spewing oil everywhere. he asked me what could have caused it and i told him, he didn't have much to say after i told him what caused except it's costing him $1500 to get it fixed. money could have been spent on a good turbo if he would've let me have his truck for a couple hours.

I'm just waiting on my tst kit kit so I can address this problem.As much as I love to drive my truck I'm cutting back til I "git er done".
Luckily I have another vehicle, as Halerazor said it's going to cost around 1500 to fix his friends,that looks like about $2000CAD . I like the cost of the kit and some supplies compared to that big bill of getting it fixed,and not to mention I can fix it at my convenience.

do a search or look in the faq section. and just get it done, this coming from a guy that said i will do it and put it off for a couple months, then pop there it goes.

Check ebay...there were a couple timing covers on there for CHEAP money. i think the last one sold for around $50. Hopefully it didn't chew up his gears!

the kdp is a dow pin in the front of the timing gear case that works it's way loose and falls into your gears. i talked to my friend and he's thinking about welding it up what do you guys think

Just kill that KDP
sleep better at night knowing you arent riskin bumpin the key and the pin out everytime u crank it....
Its my suggestion, sorry bout the tough luck though....

well i worked on my friends truck this past weekrnd, replaced his leaking fuel return line and pulled the cover off the timing gear case. he took it to a place called lafayette injection here in ohio they had it for a week and never touched it, they told him it was oil leaking past the dow pin and coming down the backside of the timing gear case. well when i took the cover off what a suprise i wish i would have took pictures. i was going to tab the pin, but you can't tab one that isn't there. we got to looking around for the pin but it was gone it must have fell in the oil pan. my friend said tthe way to the bottom of the case through all of those gears. so i showed him where they usually crack as soon as i pointed at the top left section of the case all i heard was oh s***. t looked over at it and it was cracked about an 1/8in, so then i started looking around some more and the bottom had a slight crack in it. his solution to this was to jb weld it, well i think we know how that went. it still leaks just not as much.

JB Weld will work for short cracks but not when the crack goes from one side of the case to the other. What happens with an all the way though crack is the case loses it's structural integrity and will crack on the opposite side, basically the case breaks into two pieces. Truck usually won't run when this happens and further damage may occur.

i had a buddy call one day he said his truck was making a rattling noise coming from the front o the motor he was on his cell phone and said he was on his way over to let me hear it I told him he didn't need to be driving it to make along story short it was the kdp, but as he was coming up the driveway it quit rattling we raised the hood to check the damage, and the only crack we found was on the bottom of the case we drove it awhile and then parked it on concrete to see how much it was going to leak it sat over night and to my suprise it leaked 3 drops alittle JB WELD and it doesn't leak anymore, the pin is still in the oil pan. PRETTY LUCKY!!!!

Plow, your friend still needs to pull the cover, replace the pin and tab it.
The dowel pin needs to be there or the case will eventually shift causing further problems.

I thought the dowel pin was for assembly alignment only? With all of the bolts torqued down it shouldn't shift at this point, at least I wouldn't think so.
