Question Multi-Rate, progressive-rate, dual-rate, single-rate coils....Whats the difference???

Whats the difference between all of them? Which is softer for a 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks while on the freeway?? what do you guys have on yours and how the ride from before. I dont do much towing, if anything it would be a 18' boat, other than that my truck is a daily driver, I just want a smoother ride. I do have short arms with my SuperLift 6'' RockRunner. Would it be a huge difference if I just change the coils and leaf packs.

From your opinion on a scale 1-10, one being a lifted truck with regular coils and ten being the ride of a Cadillac. What would you rate it if I just change the coils and leafs. Then rate if I were to go long arms all the way around with the coils and leafs.

I love my truck, just the ride is a pain!

Any other input is appreciated.

Cheers!

I'm a fan of progressive rate springs. I'v used them on a number of street vehicles over the years, and have always liked the ride.

I don't like dual rate springs nearly as much. I tried a set on a '69 Mustang, and didn't like them right away. It was too rapid a transition from one rate to the other. You could feel it as you passed from one zone to the other. Within a few weeks I switched to progressive rate, and the car felt a lot better.

For true performance use, you'll have a hard time finding a progressive spring. On the race track they can make the car do strange things - over steer in one corner and understeer in another. They're a chassis tuners nightmare; not an issue on a street truck.

Pay very carefull attention to the shocks. A performance oriented shock can be pretty stiff on both compression and rebound. And that can give you a rough ride.

Short arms with a 6-in lift are a big part of your problem.
You need longer arms for anything over a 3-inch...and really, longer arms even on a 3-inch yield a slightly better ride.
That's the next step for my truck, then I'm done. Honest

22-inch wheels are another big part of your problem.
They are never going to ride as well as a wheel/tire combo with a taller sidewall, even with the best suspension setup out there.

Superlift advertises a "factory-like ride quality".
IMHO, that's not saying a lot, since these trucks don't ride well at all from the factory.

You'll be much better served with a setup that replaces your coils and leafs with progressive-rate units, plus shocks that are custom valved to the springs.

Just adding longer arms to your current setup won't do much IMHO.
And adding springs & arms won't, either.
You need to do all three - arms, springs and shocks.

But truth be told, these trucks will never *really* ride like a Caddy.
But you can significantly improve the ride so that it's way better than stock.

best ride improvement for me was Carli's Hemi coils, and their rear mini packs. they also match it with bilstien 5100 shocks by far the best thing I ever did to improve my ride. cant speak for a huge lifted truck, carli coils are about 2.75inch over stock height,
my stock ride was a 0 as every bump pot hole or crack in the road was felt in my body, absolutely rough ride, after swapping in the carli stuff, ride was drastically improved, I'd say it was a 7-8, still firm yet smoothed out the bumps to the point that when I used to cross rail way tracks I'd be under 20mph to keep from rattling the truck apart to being able to hit the same tracks at 60mph+ and barely feel the bump. my 03 rides more like a caddy than my 01, but was a huge improvement on the o1, I have never seen anyone post a negative comment or that they never saw a drastic ride improvement.
my 2 cents
as well tire pressure and tire type will make a very noticable ride difference
