Muffler eliminator

I should be getting the Geno's muffler eliminator I ordered by the end of the week, anybody running straight pipe out there without a cat. converter???

How bad is the "drone" I've heard of. I'm familiar with that noise from other trucks and am thinking that if it is caused by the hollow pipe resonateing, I may be able to eliminate it by welding a strip of .5" steel along the O.D. on the pipe where the muffler was (JUST A THOUGHT). Any opinions or idea's?? IF this is even a problem!

Can anyone tell me if I can just sawzall the muffler off, or due to the length of the Geno's pipe do you have to carefully remove the old muffler and keep the pipe ends factory length?

Oh yeah, of those who have done this... Have you seen any performance gain? fuel mileage improvements? Is the thing going to be so loud that normal conversation is not an option in the cab and cops spill there coffee in there laps when you drive by?

Don't sawzall the muffler! you won't have enough pipe to use the MEP. I think its a little more responsive and the EGT's seem to be a little lower.. HAVE FUN WITH THE STOCK MUFFLER.

I used a air chisel with a cut-off chisel to slice the factory muff pipe in three places to remove it from the rest of the factory system, worked great. Only make the cuts on the muff part of the pipe leaving the pipe under it alone. Then a big hammer and/or a pry bar helps.

Enjoy!

It's kind of a PITA to put on, I recomend taking it to an exhaust shop and paying 20 clams for them to do it.

As far as drone, I have very very little, not anywhere near enough to annoy me. However, keep in mind that the truck is dynamatted (which I don't think this helps a heck of a lot)

I think it sounds awesome. Fairly quiet at idle and freeway speeds, however whenever you mash on the skinny pedal or tow up a hill she really livens up. Tunnels are deafening, and always a treat.

I did mine a few weeks back, I also wleded on a 5" SS tip. I extended the tip out past the body a bit and there is no drone to speak of. We'll see what happens come summer with the camper and a load.

So is the Geno's pipe mandrel bent? I sure hope so, sounds like a bunch of money other wise......

I wonder if a STRAIGHT straight pipe would work for less $$$

I installed mine in less than a half an hour including removal. All you need is an air chisel and a ratchet w/ some sockets. If you want the straight pipe exterior sound you'll have to live w/ the interior drone. If this is going to bother you than don't do it. Just turn the stereo up a little louder.

Got the pipe today. But its about 20 deg. outside and dark, so tommarow will be the big day. It is mandrel bent and is a bit expensive (imo), BUT, that being said. I have gone to three muffler shops now that didnt have pipe big enough, or FLIPPED OUT when I mentioned "doing somthing as illegal as removing a muffler"!
The "heavy truck repair" garage I stopped at said the same thing... "Forget it! To many people looking to sue or bust us to do that anymore."

Glad you guys told me not to whip out the sawzall (I love using that thing every chance I get), I'm gonna try using a cut off wheel, only going deep enough to get through the muffler and not the inside pipe. Just in case I goof I've got a mig welder and grinder I can clean up with, shouldnt be a problem though.

"Tunnels are deafening, and always a treat."

Right there with ya man!!! My last truck had a 360 magnum with straight pipes. The best part of my daily drive was dropping the truck into low gear going threw an underpass! It's great!!!

I'll post some pics of the results as soon as I've finished and tried her out.

SWEEEEEEEEEET!!!!

The thing sounds AWSUME!! Even my wife and 10 yr. old daughter like it.

My only complaint is that I was thinking it would be louder than it is! Kinda disapointed that you cant tell any diff. at all unless you've got a big load behind it, or your accelerating kinda hard.

At a stop light you'd never know it wasnt a bone stock truck... Pulling away from the stop light it'd suck to be the car on the right side of me with the window down!

I've had a few gasoline driven cars and trucks with glass pack mufflers that were WAY louder than this thing is, but the sound its making is pretty great! Exactly like a semi, just more bass, and throatier.

If anyone is worried about it being to loud in the cab FORGET ABOUT THAT. It just barely drowns out the noise from the engine compartment when you smash it, and any other time you dont really notice any difference, but it's cooool!!!

Got a few miles on it now (170), to early to be sure, but its looking like I'm up about 1.5 mpg from before, and I'm guessing about 20+hp (she rev's out WAY faster than before).
Money well spent!
