Thumbs up Muffler Delete -- Sounds Great (1st post)

Here is a LINK to the truck (2005 Quad Cab 4x4 G56 special ordered) showing a couple modest changes. I've had it 2 years and have decided to keep it and am starting to bomb away....

I just did the muffler delete from Genos Garage $70. Was able to cut out the muffler without damaging the pipe from the cat or to the tail so clean install with the clamps and easily reverseable if necessary.

Sounds great -- have the 6 speed so makes it great fun to accelerate. Best tone comes between 1200 and 2000 rpm's under load. Sounds like a big rig with just the cat. Again, very pleased. No drone on the highway detected -- yet.

Not sure what the neighbors will think when I come home after a night of "recreation" at 2:00 AM, however....

DOWNLOADER QUESTION: I really want to Diablo Predator but for my truck (2005 Ram) it doesn't allow the speedo calibration for different tire sizes. Cost is a factor and I can get the Superchips Flashpaq at a great price. I'm less interested in top end performance and moreso interested in economy AND the ability to change tire sizes for fun without having to go to the dealer to recalibrate....

Thoughts guys?

Hope this wasn't too wordy for a first post!!!

Thanks!

welcome. the muff delete is awesome indeed. i had the flashpaq. it taked forever to change tire sizes, but it will do it. when i bought one they were advertising it to do thing it couldnt do, but now i think they changed that. it makes good power but resets the key on counter. not a bad product for the money, but i kinda like the quad xzt for a mild power adder. then theres the smarty, but they are pretty expensive

Nice truck!

Block heater ... nice feature LOL Mine in NH did not have one and yours in FLA did... Gotta love Dodge block heater cord a $10 option but $60+ to add (at dealership) they should ALL have one.

I think the Smarty is a good way to go. 2 things you may want it for besides the fantastic power options... 1) tire speedo recalibration, and the big one.. 2) Read and CLEAR codes!

My box stock truck got 2 codes that were aberrant. Cleared (by dealer) and did return. To save the 2 afternoons off from work and the 30 mile drive having a code reader is a real convenience.

The tire recalibration if you have 2 sets of tires (like me in winter and summer) if the size is different then you can adjust yourself. Also to just correct the error in the factory speedo is worth it in your warrantee. (depending on warrantee 1500 to a lot more miles. You are getting ripped off.. an old Dodge "trick".. my 1997 was 10% off, a 10K rip off of my 100K warrantee)

SW #7 and being *careful* you can get by with the stock clutch.

SW #5 is no slouch either.

The upward flexibility of the Smarty as well as the support make it a clear choice IMHO.

A $39K truck .. what's $<700 ... Lots less than a tranny upgrade (for an auto) or a SBC clutch... Which some day you will want to get when the power bug bites you.

Smarty vs. Flashpaq vs. Diablosport Predator....

Hi John,

Thanks regarding the truck. I ordered it and just bought the few options I wanted so it's a little unique. Got tired of going to dealer after dealer and seeing $45k window stickers and automatics with other junk I didn't want. The only options on top of the SLT trip were the Thunder Road package (great value), roof lights, light group, two-tone paint and of course, the engine block heater! I got that for NO other reason than the fact that it was $10. I figure if there is an option that's $10, I have to order it. If they had more $10 options, I would have gotten them too!!!!

I'm leaning towards the Superchips Flashpaq for no other reason than the fact that I can get it for about $355.00 vs. the $650+ price for the Smarty. The Flashpaq only has two settings right now but it does the tire calibration. I've read some reviews that are luke warm and the Smarty or even the Diablosport Predator seem to be more favored. I'd go with the Predator / Puck combo but that doesn't allow speedo calibration -- a major drawback to me. Their plant is right around the corner from my office, btw and I talked to them at length. No promises that they'll be adding speedo calibration for the 2005 Dodge Ram either...

Thanks for the Smarty Suggestion. I'm still considering all options.....

Thanks for the welcome 53 ******!!!

Hey PatriotBlu.

Welcome to the site.

I, like you, needed to do the speedo recal, my choice was the Smarty. Had several erroneous codes, PITA taking ALL the time to go to the dealership and my trip was a 45 minute one, so it is nice to have the ability to clear the codes and just keep trucking. Funny thing, I have not had a code since buyint the Smarty, great insurance policy, pay one time and it's good forever. The cost factor was a no-brainer, what does it cost in time, fuel, etc to go to the dealer? My time to me is worth twice the shop rate of my dealership. Plus, I hate it that they take so much time to do something so simple.

I am thinking about the muffler delete pipe to lower the EGT's. I noticed they get a little too high for my comfort zone towing. So I am glad to hear your feedback on them. My other conern was noise, I really don't care about it coming out the tailpipe, just don't want too much in the cab.

Great truck. I have a 07 patriot blue 4x4. If you are looking for a programmer, look at the predator also. It does everything from reading and clearing codes to changing tire size.

Well, I just got back from doing mine today with one addition. I had them take out the cat, gut it, and weld a 4" pipe throught the middle of it. It ended up being not as loud as I thought it would which is good.

After seeing what condition those screens inside the cat were like only after 1400 km, I strongly suggest getting rid of the screens inside, or the whole cat completely. They were already getting clogged up. JMHO.

Now, from the seat of the pants review, I do believe the truck is a bit more peppy on the bottom end, and my overhead was already showing a slight increase in mileage on the drive home although mashing the pedal harder than normal, and it seems that the turbo spools up a bit quicker.

More time required for further testing.

You do not want to know what they charged me to do this. Stupid CDN prices and shop rates. I feel violated.

In noticed the turbo spooling quicker and also slightly better fuel economy around town. I'm at 18.1 mpg on the overhead about 200 miles in on this tank since I did it. I'm usually around 17.2 in town with the G56 and driving gently. 18.1 is quite amazing too because I've been driving anything BUT gently since I took the muffler out -- that big rig tone under acceleration is quite addictive.

I left the Cat 100% intact. I wanted a 100% reverseable option here and all I need to do is pull the Genos pipe and slip in a muffler and it's back to square 1. Not to make you cry but I had a shop do the work for me and they charged me 1/2 hour labor for $40!!! I tipped the dude $20 as I felt like the job was worth more. He was like, THANKS!!! Now I have a "friend" (his name is Archie) I can go back to if necessary.....

My truck doesn't have a resonator though. Just the Cat. There are trucks with 3 devices in their exaust system from the factory? Cat / Resonator / Muffler .... ?????

Leaning towards the Superchips Flashpaq. $355 delivered. I want the Smarty but the $300 saved is much dough and I mainly want it to change tire sizes anyway.

The gutting of the kitty and putting back in was the most expensive part - 2 hours labor. Everything inclusive ~$394.00 Cdn. An not even free vasoline.

Mine HAD all three. I had them put the pipe through the centre of the cat to make the appearance to the dealer that it was still in place and for it to act as a resonator as well - this way, if warranty work is required, it only looks like I deleted a muffler. The resonator behind the muffler is still in place and left alone. They had to weld the muffler delete pipe in due to the indentation of the clamps on the OEM pipe - they wouldn't guarantee a seal - I have the muffler in the garage.

With the piped cat acting as a resonator, and the OEM resonator, I've noticed that the sound is far deeper than others I've heard. Only loud when I'm on the go pedal hard.
