Question How much weight will the stake pockets hold?

I'm considering building a rack that will hold my Polaris Ranger on the back of my truck, similar to the "Toy Rack"
http://www.atvsolutions.com/powerspo...ail.asp?ID=178

The rear legs sit on the bed, so no weight issue there. . . .however, the front legs/stakes slide into the front stake holders. Their site doesn't give a weight limit on their product. My Ranger weights 1200lbs, however, I would guess that only about 1/3 of that (say 500lbs to be safe) would be on the front stakes as the rack slants down, shifting more of the weight to the rear legs.

I figure that some of you guys must carry some pretty heavy tools, glass, ladders, generators, welders, hay, ATV's etc. on some of your bed racks. How much weight do you think the stake pockets can hold?

That Tilt-A-Rack does not look strong enough to me! The down force might be OK depending on how it sits in the pocket, but stopping could be a big problem. With about 700 or 800 lbs. shown up there and no diagonal bracing, I'd be afraid to put on the brakes. Looks like the whole thing would just fold forward, and the stake pocket won't prevent that. The pockets seem to be designed to simply locate something and keep it from sliding. They are not very deep and are really thin.

Wouldn't a small trailer be cheaper?

Yep . . . I pull a 35ft Travel Trailer, and need to take the Ranger with us. I can't pull a second trailer behind the TT, so it has to go in the bed . . . .somehow. With the Toy Rack (above), I could also put my son's 90cc ATV under it and take them both.

I don't like the looks of that set up myself. Have you considered a deck? They actually carry all the weight on the floor of the bed. I see guys packing 2 big utility machines on them on rough roads. We used them lots for sleds with no problems.

Yeah . . . I like the "deck" a lot. Who makes it? Web site? My concern about it for my application is when I have my Travel Trailer connected, the deck would likely stick too far out in the back for turns, etc. Also, the Mega has a short bed, and my Ranger is 10ft long . . . . I think I have to have it on an angle. I guess one thought would be if I could load it sideways, but it seems like it is only designed to be loaded from the rear. I'm not too excited about having it sideways anyways as it will make the truck more apt to roll as the weight will over the outside of the bed.
