You get what you get...... My experience. I have put over 70,000 on my setup since purchased used. 90% of that is pulling a trailer on Interstate. The biggest load was 35,000 combined and got 10.8. My normal has been 14 - 16 with a 25 foot gooseneck and have tried every driving habit to improve on. A month ago a injector went down for sure and purchased a set from Pensalcola Diesel for 217 in front steps. Made the same trip as always with trailer and about 4,000 behind. For sure calculation of 20.6 MPG. These are shelf item with slightly lower pop pressure and I believe 5 nozzzles and their word was a Stage 1 setup, supposedlly good for 20 - 30 HP.
My summation is this aftermarket injector is better suited for my driving. We all know injectors wear out but forget because they keep running. I am now a firm beliver in replacing at 150,000 and perhaps less. Also some water injection to clean the combustion chamber occasionally. JMHO

my father has owned cummins from years 97 - 01 and has seen mpg from 15 -21. he now has a duramax and only getting 14. my 98.5 is getting from 18.5 - 19.4. thats with a tornado (came with the truck and dont think they do anything), afe cold air, bosch 300's, and genos straight pipe kit. new turbo is on its way and edge will be ordered this week. hopefully that will put me around 21!!

Due to the price of fuel, I have been driving like there is a egg on the peddle. but lately useing hand calculations I have been pulling 21.7 mpg and the overhead has said 21.9 so I think that it is pretty close. I do a lot of local 30 mph/ 40 mph driving some 50 but thats it for the last month or so. But the best ever has been 24.4 on the road doing 60. But I am a conservative driver.

Yeah, depends on how fast you are driving. I'd get about 25 if I kept it at 55. I get 20 doing 65 and about 18 doing 70. I only get 10mpg doing 110mph so I try to keep it below that....

and what your gear ratio is...will determine the mpgs. Same here 63-65mph I get about 19.5 w/the current setup.

lately i have been getting 17-17.5 mpg in stop and go rush hour traffic and around town. I usualy got 16 mpg (taking off real quick from every stop. On the open road i usualy get 21mpg (almost got 22 while doing an average of 70mph), but have gotten 24 mpg once and only once and would love to get it back. I run the Power Service (grey bottle in the summer, white in the winter)
I know that the 22mpg at 70 mph, and the 24mpg is unbelievable. I can't believe i got it either, since i have 4:10 gears with 285's. Also everything is hand calculated, my overhead has temp. and comp.
Also Gwirehair, if anything the tornado is probably hurting your mileage, it is kinda like a make-**** turbo. I noticed a major power gain in my '93 F-150, 5.8L (not much mileage gain, but no loss either, had too much fun with the power)
