More Boost for 2001

I hear that some are getting up to 40 psi boost out of their stock turbo. The max that I have gotten is 21 @ WOT with the Edge Juice w/Attitude set in the extreme mode. I didn't stay there long because my EGT's jumped right up to 1350 and I backed off.

Will getting more boost lower my EGT's which are a problem when towing a 9000 pound boat on the hills.

Should I try to get more boost out of it or is that a bad thing?

You're hitting the wastegate @ 21lbs. Try a J-hook from TST. It will get you up to about 29lbs of boost (any higher and you are out of the efficiency range on the your turbo). If that isn't high enough to cool the charge, time to think about upgrade.

29lbs keeps mine okay with level 1 injectors and a VA box (close to the edge box on upper levels), although I can still get it to over 1300 pulling my 7k boat up the mountains if I bog it down at all.

I'm waiting on one my fellow chapter members to donate me their HX-35 one day and see if that keeps it cooler.

When I got my Edge it did come with a wastegate but the instructions said not to install it because I had an automatic trans.

Edge is right, unless you want to spend some money on that stock tranny. More boost=more power=burnt tranny

No, that means that the Edge came with a boost elbow (not a wastegate)and that won't work on an 01 with the automatic cause it has an HY35. You need a j-hook set-up for an HY. The boost elbow only works on an HX35.
More boost=more power=burnt tranny
Yeah, you got that part right. I think you just misread the ? busa.

You can either use a J-hook from tst or get a turnbuckle from a hardware store that will serve the same purpose here's a pick of the two.

To some-what answer your question GizmoJoe, more boost up to 35psi wont hurt your turbo or head gasket but can possibly/definently damage your transmission. Since your towing it is almost a definite that you will fry the transmission and be stuck on the side of the road flailing your arms at the passing vehicles. The reason your EGT's got so hot is because of all the extra fuel and not enough air to burn it, therefore you are over fueled. If you install a J-hook on the waste gate it will force more air into the motor and you should drop your EGT's signifently(<-wrong spelling, I know, I've been drinking).

Yeah, forgot about the turnbuckle. Here is an adjustable j-hook too. (pic is for reference only) It's what I use. http://www.modsfortrucks.com/product...urbo%27&d=1094 If EGT's are a big issue while towing, just try running the Edge on a lower level and see how that works too.

Are all of these j hooks basically the same? Or are some brands better that others? For example tst or bully dog. I'm thinkin about buying one.

they are basically all the same. I had the same problem back when i first bought my truck. I put the comp on and it smoked like a freight train and got hot but no boost. Got a j hook and totally different story.

I believe the one from Bully Dog is adjustable and the one from TST is not. Maybe someone can confirm or deny that, but I believe that is the case.

The spring ones, allow your truck to still wastegate at what ever psi you adjust it to. Most guys think 30-32 is the max for a HY35. If you get a turnbuckle, the wastegate will never open so you'll have to control max boost by the amount of fuel you inject. I don't think you'll get over 30-32 with stock injectors and the comp or juice on a normal power level 1 through 4 power level. Level 5 might go higher on boost, but so will egt's and your stock tranny.

The spring J hook is going to allow wastegate to open but is not going to be adjustable, so if you get 27, thats it, if you get 30, thats it.

I personally would do whatever is cheapest= turnbuckle cause that HY35 is going to be swapped out eventually if your quest for power doesn't stop.

The only reason to get an adjustable one is so you can run too much fuel for short bursts and bypass some drive pressure in the exhaust so the engine can breathe.

I just got rid of the HY and picked up an HX35. Installed the Boost elbow and I could get 32psi right away. Added some injectors and now I get 37-38psi. Thats about as much as you want to run with an HX35. So my next step will be an Upgrade! probably an S300g.

Thanks for all the info. I never heard of the J-Hook until now...I'm glad that I asked.

Why would extra boost be bad for the tranny? Is it just the extra power and the tranny can't take it or is there more to the story? I also see several of you mention HY35. I'm guessing that is the stock turbo.

I'm more interested in lowering the EGT's when pulling then more power...but I won't pass on the chance to add more power. Will getting more boost help with MPG? I noticed comuting home tonight (40 miles on hilly roads) that I never got more then about 8 pounds of boost with most of the time being between 0-3 but I wasn't getting on it at all.

With looking at the couple J-hooks mentioned I thinking of ordering the Bully Dog because it is adjustable and spring loaded but I would like to find out a little more about this first.

you only want as much boost as you need...if 8 lbs is keeping your EGTs in check, then youre good. more boost isnt going to help MPGs.

extra boost isnt bad for your tranny, its the added power that hurts your tranny.

the hy35 should be your stock turbo...http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm
