More 1st gen truck questions...

How many of ya'll have the dash's break out of your trucks. Mine is broken off and rattles on all these Kentucky potholes. Another ques. is is there a factory tach for these trucks? what does it look like, where does it mount and does it work on 5 spd. applications? And how do I tell what gear mine is running? It has on the tag under the hood it says 4.1 / 4.0 is that helpful?

Well you probably have 4:10 gears, unless someone swapped out.

Factory tach from what I remember from some pictures sits on the dash near the A pillar, but I could be wrong. It looked similar to an aftermarket tach (maybe it was). There is a wire harness on the steering column on the trucks with a PCM. It should be there on auto and 5 spd's. The signal comes from the crank sensor through the PCM.

My dash is good (w 59k miles it better be!).

Tell us about your rig.

Yes your truck has 4.10 gears if thats what it says on the bottom of the hood....

I've never heard of a 1st gen dash cracking like that, And yes the tach works on 92-93 auto or 5 speed trucks. its plug n play as long as you get the tach and short pigtail, but they're darn near impossible to find and are basicly made of solid gold. just buy an ISSPRO aftermarket one, Also plug n' play to the factory harness in a 92-93 1st gen.

Once upon a time I heard about the dash support on the RH side behind the glovebox breaking. Easy to look for. Of course the cowl cracks are way more common and make the dash squeak/rattle a lot.

Its a little flat plug attached the the bottom of the steering column in the harness, It just barely sticks out of the tape its wrapped in. I don't have a pic sorry, check the sticky. Or search factory tach in the forum, people have posted a pic of it once or twice before.

Every first gen we've owned has this annoying sensitive rattle at the top right hand side of the dash....

My factory tach is on the dash above the wait to start panel. I am about 6'3" and can see most of it but when I do the 366 spring I won't be able to see to 3200 rpm on the tach. I say this because if you do one I'd recommend putting it where you can see it better.

I've got a used dash full of gauges out of a Peterbilt. I'll probably build a setup at the bottom of the new dash when I get one. But the new question is now is the plug on my 91? I haven't looked yet I was swamped at work today.
