I picked up a mopar filter and gasket and noticed it was a bit different than the one on the tranny.

First the filter itself is not an open element, instead its like a box with a hole in the bottom to allow the fluid to flow up and into it. I don't see a problem but was just wondering about the different design.

The gasket looks kinda neat. Its a plastic gasket with i guess would be a rubber gasketbead bonded to it. Is that a reusable type or do I have to replace it again next time?


I picked up an ATP filter kit last week and the gasket doesn't seal worth a crap!! I am hoping the OEM one will work a bit better. Can't beat a cork gasket for simplicity and funtionality..lol

The oem pan gasket is reusable. I've had the one on/off my truck at least three times and the one on the 727 in my race car has been dropped several times. They are GREAT!!

I just went to o'reilly's and got their gasket and it came with the correct filter and gasket. Now if only the bolt holes hadn't stripped out on the tranny.

Upto '97, the open style filter was used. From '98 on, the box style filter was used. The open style was sent with my DTT valve body for my '01 47RE..... they recommend the open style over the boxed style. I just did my 1000 mile "break-in" oil change last weekend. I asked for a '97 filter and was handed the open style filter.

Ok guys, thats for the replys.

The year change makes sense but why they would box it I don't know. The only thing I can see is it will still work with a lower fluid level in the tranny since its picking it up about an inch lower.


Either way I have a good gasket now that shouldn't leak so I should be good to go.

......if it does leak, you need to check your pan. This gasket is the best thing since MoPar started machining the valve cover gasket surface of the heads (any old school guys will figure this one out)....and went with the chevy style dipstick seal.
