FWIW , you can use whatever filter you want , as long as it meets specs , you DO NOT have to use overpriced mopar filters to keep your warranty, if you HAD to use mopar filters , chrysler would have to provide them to you.

Hey!

I just bought 2 filters at the dealership, I specifically asked for 2005 MY filters because I thought they were the newer design.

They sold me Chrysler # 5083285AAm and there is that number plus a MO285 on the Mopar boxes.

Did they sell me the right filter? He looked it up in his book.
Is the 2005 filter the newer redesigned one? Mine looks like the older design filter, and it was the same part number they had installed when they changed the oil before I bought my 97.

Are you saying that Fleetgaurd, purolator and motorcraft are owned by mopar? All the dealer is saying is that: this list of filters DO meet the specs as far as microns etc. And will have less of a prob. if using your warranty..

The bulletin that required approved filters is old and there is another bulletin released over four years ago saying you can use any filter you want. This happened after Fram threatened Chrysler with a lawsuit.

I go with CASE IH filters. They are rebadged cummins/fleetguard filters. I also use CASE 15w-40. Rest assured if it works in the tractors, it will work in my truck. I just know that my dad and his duramax are jealous when they look at the size of my filter.

IIRC the MO285 is the standard cellulose filter for 2005 engine and meets the standard filtering requirements for Dodge. I use the Fleetguard Stratopore filter (LF16035 and it can be used on your 2005) its a much better filter and cost less if I buy it online at Genos then if I paid for it from Dodge. You can also ask your local Cummins dealer if they have it and compare the cost. Yes the Fleetguard Stratopore cost a bit more but filters better then the cellulose filters.

I'm still wondering how FRAM calls that a "filter"????.... The ones i've taken apart look more like a tin can with a shop rag stuck in them!!!...

Cummins and Dodge don't post their service bulletins on the net, they like paper.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
It has been brought to our attention that a few Daimler Chrysler service
technicians are recommending that the FRAM PH3976 filter not be used on
Daimler Chrysler vehicles with the Cummins 5.9L Turbo Diesel engine and
that use of these filters can cause damage to the engine. Daimler Chrysler
has informed us that they released a Technical Service Bulletin to their
dealerships communicating a potential contamination issue and recommending
the use of Fleetguard manufactured filters.
FRAM has been selling PH3976 filter for this engine application since the
engine platform launch and it has maintained an extremely reliable service
record. Late in 2000, Cummins and Daimler Chrysler brought to our
attention a low incidence failure mode in their Cummins 5.9L Turbo Diesel
engine of the piston cooling nozzle plugging, resulting in engine failure.
The plugging was caused by contaminates lodging in the nozzle. The
contaminants included metal chips, calcium carbonate, polyethylene, and
styrene butadiene that are not associated with filter manufacture, and a
neoprene compound, which is used as a sealant on the tapping plate of the
filter. There were also several other engine warranty issues determined
unrelated to the piston cooling nozzle plugging that were part of the
engine failure sample. A small amount of neoprene rubber was used in the
FRAM filter as a sealant.
Throughout our investigation with Cummins and Daimler Chrysler on various
engine failures, no conclusive evidence was found to assign cause to
filters or other contamination sources. However, driven to satisfy our
customers, the FRAM engineering team made modifications to the design
eliminating the neoprene and expedited development and manufacturing to
release a revised filter model number to PH3976A. With the design change
on the PH3976A completely removing the use of neoprene, there is
absolutely no validity in comments that the Fram filter should not be used
for this application or that it may cause engine failures associated with
plugged nozzles.
This information should be openly conveyed to customers if they have any concerns or apprehension about using a FRAM filter for this application.

I still wouldn't use a Fram, they're cheap. I used Napa Gold (Wix) filters for a couple hundred thousand miles on both my trucks until a friend who sold his CTD gave me two cases of Fleetguards. Now I use them because they're free!

I think I would trust Toilet Paper then a Fram filter of any kind.
