MOBIL DELVAC

I read where Mobil Delvac is considered a top oil however I notice only 4% use it. I want this new diesel to last a long time so I want the best. What do you think? Thanks Dave

Re:MOBIL DELVAC

No experience, but Rotella has been used by many for a very long time and the miles keep adding up. That is what I am running...to each his own....
Use the best filter and change when you are supposed to.

Re:MOBIL DELVAC

The choice of oil and oil filters are two of the most emotional topics on this board. There are lots of choices to pick from concerning good oil and good filters, and its tough to go wrong just as long as you follow a good maintenance policy.

I used Rotella T for the first couple changes, but then changed to the Mobil Super Delvac 1300 because thats what was available at Cotsco. I wouldn't be afraid to use ANY of the oils listed in the survey.

Are you talking the conventional delvac or Delvac 1, which is full synthetic? Delvac 1 is in my opionion the best off the shelf diesel oil out there and I would say every bit as good as Amsoil. Though it is expensive and hard to find sometimes.

If you want to look at another top quality conventional oil, check out conoco's hydroclear brand, good stuff!

I believe Dave is referring to the poll on the main page of this site. It a great lubricant, although expensive and hard to find. Although while still running under a warranty, I can't justify dumping it at the intervals stated in my owners manual.

Re:MOBIL DELVAC

The Mobile Delvac products are both excellent oils (especially the full synthetic Delvac 1). Probably, the main reason (other than being a very good oil) that Rotella is so popular is because its fairly cheap and you can get it almost anywhere. As was said before, oil opinions are pretty subjective.

Re:MOBIL DELVAC

Pour points and viscosity aren't the whole story. Both Delvac 1300 super(dino oil) and Delvac 1 are extremely fortified with additives. D1300 is probably the most highly additized dino oil out there. Rotella is just tried and true, and is decent at best. The truth is these cummins engines will run on snot if you really wanted them to. However, if you're particular about oil,two of the best oils out there are Delvac 1 and Amsoil 15w40 HDD/Marine. Both are made from Group IV basestocks (much higher quality than crap like syntec, valvoline premium blue extreme, rotella synthetic etc, which are group 3).

D1 is king, if you're ready to fork over $25 per GALLON shipped. However, you can easily go 3x the drain interval of rotella with equally good results. Its all a matter of whether or not you enjoy wasting your time changing the oil every 5k or would rather just do it once every 10-15k.. I've used d1 in three diesels with absolutely excellent results in my oil analyses, as have countless others. PM me if you want a link of where to buy it, because locally its nearly impossible to find d1. If you live in a southern climate, I would recommend the amsoil 15w40 marine though. It runs about 16-18/GALLON shipped, and has just about as good of results. I prefer the d1 for northern climates though, as its a 5w-40 compared to 15w40. Good luck!

Re:MOBIL DELVAC

Delvac 1300 is STOCKED with additives, a much heftier additive package than rosmella and some of the other basic over the counter dino diesel oils. Great stuff.

Re:MOBIL DELVAC

Caterpillar has a 5W-40 synthetic oil. Its the Delvac 1 packaged for them. It should be available at most of the larger Cat dealers.

Its right there on the shelf for $22.05 / gal at Halton Cat in Portland, OR for the locals.

DTT or ATS? Just kidding. I use Rotella T in my truck and it runs great. Actually ran smoother than the Delo 400 I had been using. It doesn't smell either. I don't know what people are talking about. But I have never smelled anything. I can't justify spending $200 on oil just to dump it out 10-15K miles later. Maybe $200 on something that would last me longer than 2 or 3 months. Besides, I like changing my oil every 5K. Gives me an excuse to work on my truck. To each his own I guess. I like my Rotella. But that's just me.

Re:MOBIL DELVAC

Big Blue, who spends $200 per oil change? Delvac 1 is one of the most expensive oils out there, and it's $22/GALLON, meaning around $70 per oil change.. ???
