Unhappy Missing Engine

I am new to this so bear with me. Yesterday the truck started missing. It misses in 5-6 gear, after I reach around 1500rpm it stops. Any suggestions?
The truck is a 2500, 4x4, with a K&N filter. No other modifications. It has 38,000 miles on it.

When I first read the title the picture in my mind was someone running down the street with a Cummins on his back (my engine was here last night?) I was thinking "anyone who can steal that thing is NOT gonna get me to try to stop him

Check fuel pressure to make sure the pump is giving out what it's supposed to. Then make sure fuel filter not plugged. Then try some diesel injector cleaner (pick a fav brand, no advert here). Then you have to start spending real money could be comp, could be injectors, could be compression or valves. Too many variables to tell without more info.

Anyone know where Scotty has been? He must be up to no good again stealing engines and all......

Definately check fuel pressure... it sounds like your injector pump may not getting enough fuel (potential cause of early VP44 injector pump failure) get a fuel pressure gauge installed asap!

Missing Engine

The truck ran just fine today. My husband tried everything to get it to miss including lugging it down in 6th gear and it performed perfectly. What does that sound like?

Red face Missing Engine

We had the truck checked out, all the computer stuff showed that nothing was wrong with it. It started bucking and jumping again tonight going up hill. It is still under warrantee so we weren't charged anything to have it checked. Please, do you guys have any thoughts on what could be wrong? Thanks

I bet money your lift pump is going out... especially with the cutting in and out on a hill. Have the dealer check your lift pump if you're under warranty.

Smile Missing Engine

Thank-you! We took the truck in yesterday and they couldn't find anything. So after your post my husband called the dealer back and asked if they checked the lift pump and they said yes but weren't sure and had discussed that it may be the problem. So back to the dealer this a.m. It sure helps to have a little knowledge. If it hadn't been for you guys we probably would not have had a clue.

Get them to check over the injection pump also for codes/damage, as a weak or dead lift pump can easily take out an injection pump in a very short time. I would insist they change injection pump out also while under warranty, as damage has been done to it now internally if lift pump is in fact found to be no good. Good idea to upgrade your fuel system to FASS, Vulcan, or Scotty, and gauges, to prevent it from happening again, especially if it's out of warranty, and you have to pay for it next time.

Missing Engine

Just an update on our fiasco with the dealership. They took the truck in and hooked it up to all of their fancy machines and couldn't find a thing wrong. So the guy took it out and drove it with his computer attached and found something wrong with a sensor. So they had to order it. It came and didn't fit, it was for a different year. Evidentally the one for our truck isn't made any longer. Go figure. They said they could not find one at any warehouses and that they were on back order by Chrysler. So we took it home. It has been running perfectly. I guess when they took it out to check the new one that didn't fit and put it back in it started working alright. Must have been a poor connection or corroded. We will let them install the new one when they get it anyway and keep the old one as a spare.

If its under warranty you cant keep the parts.

If you know what sensor it is, you can order it or pick it up locally from Cummins directly and have it right away. Also, parts this way are much less expensive than the dealer. If you call, make sure you have the engine serial number handy.

missing engine

By what you are saying you are having the same problems as me. Mine is from new from the factory. I am sorry for you. Mine bucks between 1100 and 1275 rpm, Idles rough and can feel a thumping in the drivers seat. What the problem is an arc in the electrical system or PCM. If this is what it is you won't find anyone who can identify it! Does the engine sound tinny when it is giving problems? I would like very much to see and hear the engine if you are ever this way let me know if you would. PM me if you think I can help further.
