Minimum/optimum size IC for a non-IC'd 6BT
Any recomendations for a minimum sized intercooler for my 6BT?
The motors in a 92 toyota landcruiser, and so I dont have as much space as a dodge truck would have, Im also pondering a hood scoop and top mounting it, although I dont feel like dealing with top mount fans...
The truck will have a Denny T and maybe later a 4 inch exhaust, it wont see any heavy pulling, mostly a DD with some time on the trails.
Thanks for your advice!

my opinion is youll never really need the intercooler (seeing youre never hauling)... id add nitrous instead. it is like an intercooler in a bottle. plus it can add serious power when you might need it on the trail.

Thanks, I found in another diesel I have that it knocked the EGT's down a couple hundred degrees, this would allow me to run a little more fuel, or keep the engine running temps a little lower, which might be nice for the longevity of the motor. As well I do run it on the highway to my brothers place a few hours away, and I have 4.11 gears and 37" tires so it is revved a little high, 65-70 mph for the drive and I find the engine temps stay around 1000-1200 celsius (pyro in the manifold pre turbo)
It seems like my 6BT is already running a little on the hot side, so I'd like to intercool it before messing with the fuel settings.

As far as more power on the trail goes... well it would be nice, but im running landcruiser axles at the moment (8.75" ring gear, open front and rear diffs with 37's) so Im not really looking to get all the power out of it I can, so much as to maximize its efficiency and longevity.
Although I do got a Denny T fuel pin sitting on the shelf waiting to go in...

I thought more like 30-40 hp, the intercooler was to keep the engine running cooler with a tad more fuel, without having to keep a water meth bottle full, sounds interesting but I would probably find myself upgrading the axles sooner than intended...

Celsius?? if your running that hot aint no intercooler gona help
could be your turbo is chocking at the higher RPMs

Well I installed the Denny T Version 2, advanced the timing a little and adjusted the screw for the fuel diaphram a little. The cruiser is a different beast now! It'll make a lot of smoke and go like stink if Im heavy on the skinny pedal, and the Pyro hasnt gone over the top with temps. That and I can break the 37's loose on pavement in 2nd now!
There's some pics of it here: http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...-re-build.html

It does pretty good, It is open front and rear diffs (4.11's), though toyota had electric lockers in the cruisers the year after mine(92) which would be nice in the mud and some of the trails here in alberta (but hard on the longevity with the extra weight + torque of the cummins), .
So with the torque of the cummins I may be better off with open diffs, unless I find the money one day to upgrade the axles. I'd really like to go to the volvo c303 portals but don't have the money at the moment, and the gearing with them is 5.99 so it's be pretty much only an off road vehicle.
The suspension has been swapped from coils all round to airbags and I run a compressor and paddle valves in the cab, so I can lift it for water crossings, lower it for the highway, raise one side for off camber, and lift the front or back for ascending or descending hills which is nice, and the articulation helps even the weight on each tire, helping gain traction on open diffs.
One nice thing about the diesel's in an off-road vehicle is that you can idle down a lot of the trails and you hardly burn any fuel all day, but still have the torque if you want it, as compared to a torquey gas engine you run out of fuel before you get to the trails...

Thanks! I still have a bunch of stuff I want to do to it. I half started a rear bumper for it then my welder gave up the ghost. Also hoping one day for an aux fuel tank and snorkel.
I have a 12 volt shower head with submersible pump I got from Bass Pro, I am planning on using the existing trans cooler(connected to the rad) to try and heat water for showering while camping. I should be able to use the heat from the rad to warm the water, and just recycle it into a collapsible resevoir till it gets about the right temp. I'm planning on building an arm to support, and if I can figure out some sort of curtain it should be small and make the better half more motivated to camping on the weekends! I got a roof top tent last year and she's eager to try it out as well.
