Mileage on a Cummins Engine

Mileage on a Cummins Engine
Just had a question about the Cummins engine. I am looking for a Dodge P/U either 3/4 or 1 ton. I also want FWD. I am wanting a used one. My question is this, what is considered to be too many miles on a diesel? I realize alot of that will depend on how well maintained it was etc. But was curious as to what point I should shy away from one due to mileage concerns. This will be my first diesel engine. Have been pulling with a Ford 1 ton w/ 460. Ouch $$$$. Ready for a change that will help on fuel economy and longevity. Thanks in advance for advice.

Re:Mileage on a Cummins Engine
I bought a Dodge ctd with 171k on it and I never blinked an eye about it. I would say if you going to use it for a buxiness truck pulling a lot I would try to keep the milage around 100k. at or near 100k on my 94 dodge the MPG had just hit peak. I haul everything I can put on the back of it. I feel safe enough to drive coast to coast with the truck I have with 170K with or w/o a load.
Hope that helps a little

I have sold many high mileage trucks. The junk ones I trade and the good ones I retail. Sold one to a guy with 262k. He called me the next spring asking if I had any more for sale. As far as I know he is still driving it. (that was 1998). Maintenance is key. If it is maintained it will be a good truck. HTH. Best of luck.

I agree completely that maintenance is the key! I'm willing to spend more $$$ with full maintenace records then one with out any! Bought mine from a private party with full maintenance records at 102K miles and I'm glad I did.

Re:Mileage on a Cummins Engine
I saw on a website where a guy had 1 million miles on his '96 Cummins. No problems other than routine parts for an engine that used. He also said it has not been rebuilt yet! That's
143,000 miles per year
12,000 miles per month
400 miles per day...every day for 7 years
Holy cow!

Re:Mileage on a Cummins Engine
I thought it said on the cummins website that it was rated for something like 400 or 450,000 miles before overhaul?
I wouldn't worry too much about mileage... just look for maintenance records... ;D

Re:Mileage on a Cummins Engine
I bought my truck with 250k, from my brother he had it since about 200k. When he brought it home it had fuel recieps from all over the southeast. I think a cellphone tower erection crew had it. Its still running great uses no oil and is as strong as ever. Oh and when my brother brought it home it had a boost gage hanging in the quarter window. Somone had been playing. I would like to meet him/her.

Re:Mileage on a Cummins Engine
How many miles you get before overhaul is going to depend upon a lot of things, but mainly how quickly the miles are put on. Time seems to be about as big a factor as mileage. The guys who put 300+ miles per day on their trucks stand a lot better chance of reaching a million miles than someone who puts on 30.

Re:Mileage on a Cummins Engine
I only have 60,000 so far. The engine is just starting to feel like it is breaking in. I will be happy reaching 300,000 before I decide to trade in, or buy another. Looks like it might take a while though.
