Mileage for 4x4 Dually?

Mileage for 4x4 Dually?
Ive seen the overhead reader read up to 16.6mph going 60-65 with the tailgate down, then sometimes only get 10.8 driving around town and only 14mpg cruising near 75-80mph. I know some poeple get 18-20mpg, but those are mostly short wheel base, or 2wd and not duallies.
So what kind of mileage are you guys getting and how much freeway or street driving does your rig do and is it an auto or manual with dually that is.

Could it be that, the huge fenders is just like the tailgate, just more surface area that has to push through the air resistance, and the added weight and the addition height compared to the 2wd version? How much do you get while towing?

I get 15 at best on the highway and around 13 in town. I get 9 mpg towing a 10,000# fifth wheel. Mine is a 2004.5....not sure what you have but most "honest" reports I have seen are around 15mpg at best. I guess it is the fenders and two extra tires contacting the pavement that makes us get 2mpg less than the SRW guys.

Mine started out at 13 mpg empty and city/highway did not matter. Towing GVW 19,000lbs around 10-10.5.
Empty, and after flash, it is slowly steadily coming up to now 14-15 mpg city and 16 highway+. Also noticed the dump with climatized fuel.
Will have to wait until spring to compare apples to apples as far a fuel goes.

I just came off a road trip in my new 4x4 dually. When I started the trip, it had about 1500 miles on it. Unloaded, it got 17.0 mpg. This was verified by a hand calculation. Coming back with about 4500 lbs of car and trailer, it got about 13. Both of these trips were with the cruise set on about 67 mph.
If you're wondering about your mileage, check your tire pressure. FRONT TIRE PRESSURE IN PARTICULAR IS CRITICAL!!!
I was getting 10.4 mpg in town and 14.2 on the interstate. My front tires had 45 psi in them. I inflated them to 80, and mileage immediately jumped to 13.5 in town and 17 on the highway. It really made that much difference. Your tires may call for a different max pressure, so inflate accordingly of course. As a side note, I did not notice any real change in ride quality at all when I inflated them.

Yeah I checked that before, they were about 50psi on the last trip and the air pumps at the gas station dont have any power to inflate above that. But we have a 140psi Air compressor at the shop which should easily inflate them to 80psi. Will do that and recheck.

My last check of mileage on the highway was after I installed the functional Ram Air hood and I got 16.95 mpg. That is the best I have ever gotten. Before that 15.35 was the best highway mileage. That was driving between 70 & 73 mph. My last check for in town mileage was 14.05. These are all hand calculated.
Weight will have an effect on mileage also. The Ghost Rider full of fuel (95+ gallons) and with me inside, weighs 8860#'s. I also have the 48RE tranny and 3:73's.
I now have 30,000 miles on it.
So, it seems that those of us that have dually's are all right about the same. This is good to know, I thought there may be something wrong with Ghost Rider.

I have about 1000 miles on the clock with 4.10 rear. I'm getting about 14-15mpg mixed city/highway. I really hope it improves as it breaks in.
I didn't think the 4.10 rear would impact mileage THAT much.
Also put about 15 more psi in my tires this weekend. Seemed to improve mileage very little at best.
I was hoping my engine fell into the mileage TSB range, but it was built well after.

Good question. I hope towing does help, since I towed for about 500 miles a couple of days ago. I suspect that it does help it break in faster, since running the engine harder causes the piston rings to press harder against the cylinder walls, which in turn should speed break in of at least that part of the engine. Not to mention main and rod bearings are loaded more heavily when towing, hopefully loosening them up a touch.

I get about 15.0 to 16.0 mostly freeway at about 73mph,,but this is also towing a 7k trailer about 100miles each tank full..I have 3.73 gears and 82k miles on the truck.
