Might buy a new truck - some questions
Thinking about buying another pickup. Leaning towards a diesel, because of the durability, and longevity thing and the better fuel economy. I will be using it to travel to work, about 70 miles round trip, occassional medium towing, (5, 6, 7K pounds), and some snowplowing, (5 or 6 driveways). I am planning on keeping the truck for a long time, so I would like to get pretty good mpg. I am going to be looking at the fords, and chevy gmc's, but I would more than likely go for a dodge with the cummins. I think the cummins is a tough engine to beat. I will be going for a quad cab or a mega cab. I see they have out now the 5.9 and a 6.7 engine. My questions is what engine tranny combo might give me the best mpg.
Thanks

Ok, first, Welcome!
Second, ask about the newest up in the 3rd gen section. They are really knowledgeable about the engine tranny combos
Third, if you want to plow but want to keep the truck a long time, get a beat up gasser. My uncle is a collision specialist and helps his buddies fix up their trucks. Snowplowing is very hard on the frame. They do snowplowing in the side also. They have to replace their trucks about every 5-6 years. They do mostly residential but have a few parking lots.
Cummins has the best record that I *know* of as for durability minus stuff like the vp44, 53 block and a few others. Some members have 1,000,000 mile on them. I have yet to here a chevy or ford get that mileage.
Ok, flame suit on!

I love my truck it gets about 18mpg and I drive it every day to and from work and also do some light hauling just like you. Trust me go with Dodge and you'll be more then happy, or at least until you have to service no don't let that scare you it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. Welcome to the family here have plenty of pictures when you buy.

FInd your self a mega-cab with the 5.9 and an auto and you'll be set!! Or stick if you prefer shifting but if you don't tow that much you'd be better off with an auto!!! They've got awesome rebates on what's left of 06!!!

Yeah, I got an 07 5.9 in the sig for 34,700. Ten grand off sticker, they want the 5.9's off the lot and the 6.7s on. I got an auto.
For the money saved over the 6.7 I can buy a lot of diesel. I probably saved upwards of 4-5 grand by going with the 5.9 and I don't have to potentially deal with the new emissions particulate filter and catalyst they are now using on the 6.7.
