I have my timming cover off and would like to set my timing before putting it back together. I am going to cummins power systems for a new gasket but I don't think I want to pay there price for a timing kit. Thanks

The parts counter guy said thay do not carry or sell the tools for setting the timing. Wes was not there. Anyone know were I can get the tools I need

Someone posted about how to do it with out needing any tools other than a gear puller. Set the pump back to stock timing by pinning both the pump and engine. Mark somewhere on the balancer where TDC is. Then mark the balancer how much you want. 1 degree would be circumference of the balancer divided by 360. 1 degree would be somewhere between 5/64" to 3/32" on a 9-3/4" balancer. Rotate the engine backwards the desired amount, and reset the gear on the pump shaft.

I made up my own timing set. An old oil pan plug fits where the DV holder is. Drill it out to accept a dial indicator, and put a set screw in it. A 1" dial should do it. I mount a metric dial on top of it so I don't have to do any conversions. The cam lift on my 215 pump is around 13mm. So get a dial with atleast that much travel. You'll need a delivery valve socket to get the DV holder off. And a barring tool to bar the engine over. And you'll still need the gear puller.

My cost of everything so far is around $60, not including the barring tool. $20 cheapo dial, $25 for the gear puller, $10 for the drill and tap for the set screw in the plug. I could've saved $20 if I bought the $5 puller instead. I had the metric dial laying around, along with the drain plug. Swamp Donkey mailed me the DV socket to use. They are about $45 through Snap-On. I bought a tool kit from Cummins with the barring tool for $85. Just the barring tool alone was $70! Don't know where guys are getting it for $30.
