in the market for a turbo

as you can see in my sig. my truck has 370s cut DVs 4k gsk increased timing. i do a lot of trailer pulling and i may hook to the sled once in awhile if i get a turbo. im needing input on what turbo you would reccommend with my current setup, and yet still work if i upgrade to bigger injectors. i have heard the s300 would be good but wanted any suggestions anyone has

Well, it looks like you have a lot of fuel. Its not too hard to send someone in the right direction if they dont tow much since you can run a larger charger in that case.

Since you tow though, you definately dont want to go too big. A big charger will have high cruising EGT's and with a load, it may cruise at 1100-1200* and only get worse on the hills.

The options I would look at if i were you is an HX40/16, A BD super b, or a 62mm

Now, here are the 2 turbo's more oriented at towing than performance, but that will be a nice step over stock:

-The HX40/16 would be ideal with the 60mm compressor wheel. Mine has a 58mm compressor wheel on it though, and does great towing with good spool. It would either be a 58/65/16, or 60/65/16.

-The BD Super B is an S300G. It is a 57/65/14 and they are a great towing charger that flows about the same amount of air as an HX40. They spool really well, and flow better than the stock charger. They are also more durable than an HX40.

The BD Super B or HX40 either one will support 400-450hp. They have both made more, but 450hp is a good estimate on what they will make. Both will spool really good. The HX40's break the shafts if you bark them hard fairly often, but i dont have a problem not barking mine and it has been great so far. Neither of these turbo's should have much higher cruising egt's(empty or loaded) than the stock turbo. The HX40's should be gated around 40psi, and the Super B is probably fine up to 45psi.

Now, for the 62mm S300's. These would still tow OK, but they are a little more performance oriented than the 2 above.

-A 62/65/14 would be the first choice. This is the turbo that is better for towing than any other 62mm charger. The smaller exhaust wheel will allow for quicker spool up to keep EGT's down and boost up. Cruising EGT's may be slightly hotter than the 2 above, but it will still be a good turbo. It should support right around 500hp with the right setup. It will tow fine, but EGT's will be a little warmer than the 2 above, so you'll have to keep an eye on them.

-A 62/71/14 would be the most performance oriented charger that i would want to tow with. It will have higher cruising EGT's than any of the others listed, and spool slower too, but it will support the most power. 500+ shouldnt be a problem with it. It will tow, but you will need to keep a good eye on EGT's and keep the RPM's up.

That should be a pretty good break down of your average towing chargers. Hopefully it will be of some help. Personally, if i was towing a lot, I would look at one of the top 2 chargers. Either one can be had used for less than $800, or new for around $1000. I bought my HX40 used for $300. Either of the top 2 will do you fine towing.

Now, the bottom 2 turbo's will require you to put some more effort into keeping the EGT's down when you are towing, but will make more power when you are playing.

So basically you just need to decide if you are wanting a truck that tows great and runs good, or a truck that tows ok and runs great. Hopefully this helps!

Engineered Diesels 62/68/14 or 13 SS housing.
They have told me that the 68mm turbine wheel is ideally suited for towing and will also flow more than a 71mm wheel.
I will be able to let you know soon. Mine should be here today or tomorrow.
I took my HTT 62/65/14 and sent it to E.D. fo the following upgrades:
68mm turbine wheel and milling to fit wheel.
Their NEW Super 62 wheel.
Their S300 Race Cover
and their wastegate actuator spring/rod.

Chris at E.D. said this combo will flow more or the same amount as a 64 but will spool like a 62.

AND,

Its going to be a bad to the bone top turbo for my winter twins project.

Heres their website.
http://www.engineereddiesel.com/

Give Chris a call and see how much difference the price will be from HTT or Industrial Injection, you'll be amazed.

Remember all the turbos these so called "diesel turbo shops" sell are all off the shelf parts, just put together differently, with ALOT of markup.

For example 3 years ago I paid $650 LESS for my HTT 62/65/14 that they still offer to this day with no changes.

I didnt realize they were making a 62/68 now. I bet that is a nice turbo. That sounds like something id like to try down the road.

Engineered Diesel is a great place to deal with too. They are top notch and have good prices. They also make some other awesome parts too. They have a really nice spacer with an external gate built in.

I guess the 68mm wheel is an off the shelf part. Don Wagner on here who goes by other aliases on different forums, says that the 68mm turbine wheel is one of the best wheels for 12 valves.

E.D.s external wastegate adapter is a sweet piece. I will be ordeing it for my twin build.

Good answeres guys. That cleared some things up for me.

I dont mean to hijack this thread but sinse were on the subject..
Ive been planning on upgrading to a 62/65/14 for some time now but that wont be for another year or two. But may have a chance to score a HX40 pretty soon for a good price.
My goal is 450 rwhp with good times on the track too, but I also tow 4-12k quite a bit and plow snow as well so I need the quick spool and little smoke when unwanted.

So Ive been thinkin get the HX40 now, and in the future turn it into a compound setup with a 62/65/14 or maybe 62/71/14.
My question is, Would that twin set be a good set up/one that I could run with my fuel mods being.. HOT j/a, BD RAD, and 110 or 120 sticks?
Or would twins be too much without more fuel?
If yes to much, Would a HX35 with a 62/65 or 62/71 be better with same fuel mods as above?

I had a hx40 on a 12 valve with decent fuel and timing. In my opinion for towing it was terrrible. With a auto it didn't spool quick enough and could never get the heat back down it had built during slow spoolup. This is just my opinion, it might be good with a manual but not a auto trailer pulling.
I have no experience with the s300 turbos, the twins I run are about the best towing setup I've had of the three different sets of twins I've run. Good luck!

Thats funny. My HX40 seems pretty darn good for towing to me, and i have a really tight converter. I normally run in valet mode, and have no problems with EGT's at all. I can have 10psi by 1200rpm, and full boost by 1600rpm under load. It is a little slower to light than the HX35 was, but it does pretty good. Mine is a little slow to spool out of the hole because of my converter being so tight, but once i get rolling, it does great.

I was towing heavy in the summer but it wasn't much better in cool weather. It might have been the 370 injectors and 100 plate but even in valet I couldn't keep it cool. I was grossing between 24,000 and 34,000 most of the time. After I put twins on it exhaust temps were not a problem.

Skip the HX40 and go to at least a 62/65/13ss or 14.

The Super B and other turbos are way too small for your fueling. It's like running a stock charger on the compressor side.

I vote for a garrett GT3788R or a GT4088R, of course I bias toward garrett ball bearing. I run a 3782R, with smallish sticks, the turbo spools as good as stock or better. Tons of air, for medium to big sticks. The best combo going is the GT3782R over a BTH-3B, wicked combo. But I might have said that before.

Ball bearing spoolup is awesome.
Only problem I see with ball bearing chargers is getting them rebuilt.
I always heard either you cant get them rebuilt or it costs the same money for a new one.

thats a funny story, I been told that about lots of things. Garretts, are just as tuff as the Holset and S variant turbo (I can't spell tonight). Yes, garretts do fail, but so any body elses. Usually at that point you just chuck the old turbo and buy another new/used one.

I'm not against Garrett or any other ball bearing turbo. My Bro runs a 66 garrett in his 87 RX7 500hp to the rear wheels. Hes never had any problems either.

So correct me if im wrong, the consensus is.. twins would be a bit over kill with my fuel mods? And for what I want and need the truck for?
The 62/65/14 I was origionally planning on would be the better choice?
