How many have installed their own VP44's
Just got my new blue chip special X pump and pump cover a few minutes ago. I've been reading about the pump install, and watched the videos on you tube. It doesn't SEEM too bad, but I wondered how many folks actually did their own, or paid a shop to do it. My concerns are that I will somehow get it out of timing or drop something into the front cover. I was quoted roughly $750 for the install at a local shop.

I'm like you, putting one on next week. I just simply don't have time right now, so I'm paying someone to do it. $750 seems high, the local diesel shop here is going to install the IP and a new LP for $250.

aint bad I have done a few. It cant go out of time because there is a keyway on the pump shaft. Just make sure you point the keyway up during installation. Replace the cam sensor behind the pump while you there.

Like the others have said, you don't have to worry about getting the timing off. Just make sure the keyway on the shaft is pointing upward. Otherwise you risk losing the key in the front cover. And when you reinstall, make sure the key lines up with the notch in the gear. If it's not lined up and you force it on, you can damage the key.
When you pull the injector lines off, remove them in two groups of 3. Don't remove the pieces holding them together, otherwise you'll have a fun time trying to line them all back up.
Do you have a puller to separate the pump shaft from the gear? That's really the only special tool you'll need.

Give me $600 & I'll do it OR...borrow a steering wheel puller from the parts store & save the $600. Be sure to pull the 2 bolts on the bracket or the VP won't come out. Threads match those on the intake horn. I put a bolt in the gear threaded hole so I could line it up with the VP shaft easier. Be sure to have the key at 12:00. VP should slide in easy when you tighten the nut - if everything is right.
Get rid of the stock LP & install a new gasket in the manifold so it doesn't cause a boost leak & gives more room.
You have to decide what to do about leaking hard lines. Do you pull the tubes, clean both ends with scotch brite and install new O-rings or wait to see if they leak? Your choice. 4 of mine leaked & I had to pull the lines again (twice). I'm a lot faster now.
ARROW ON THE KEY POINTS TOWARD THE VP. CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT THE KEY NUMBERS MATCH THE VP NUMBERS.

How much tapping did it take to get it out? When I removed my original VP44, it took a LOT of pressure on the puller before it finally popped loose. I couldn't imagine how much hammer work it would have taken to get it to move.

It comes out easy but might not AND there is NO reason to not have the correct tool and chance buggering the core. Reminds me of a Shakespear story...Much ado about nothing.

It took a some tapping but they came out. Fan shroud is in the way a bit and you wont damage thread because you thread the nut on the threads. But like I said if you can get the tool get it. only thing I was sayin was if your in a jam it can be done with out it.

On mine, I applied the pressure with the puller, then tapped on the gear a couple of times with a small hammer and it popped right off.

Blue chip sent a loaner puller with the pump, and I'll send it back with the core. Sounds like it makes things a lot easier.
Should I get new replacement O rings for the injector lines before I start the project?
I will replace the cam position sensor and intake gasket while I'm at it.
I did replace the stock LP with some kind of aftermarket pump on the frame rail years ago, with bigger lines and fittings and all. So the stock LP is just hanging out on the block, I think.

I just finished doing mine yesterday. The hardest thing I found was the # 5 an 6 fuel lines. I must have installed and removed my pump 5 or 6 times just to check the key cause it just seemed to install to EASY finaly I put the bolts in and finished it up. It runs great now, also installed a new AirDog 100. It did take me a little longer to do than it should have, I just got out of the hospital an was not supose to be doing anything, but I goter done.

Junkman mentioned leaking hard lines, I figured he meant the injector lines, but maybe not?
Bowhunter, how long did it take you to swap your VP? I'm a bow hunter too, been practicing with some new slick tricks this week. I like em!
