manual shift an auto??

I was wondering if it is O.K. to manualy shift an auto tranny. I have always had a manual trans until I got this truck. I learned to drive on a standard trans. and was always instructed to downshift instead of stepping on the brakes. I miss being able to downshift when I want to slow down. Can I shift this tranny into a lower gear (empty or towing) ????

I DON"T want to damage anything but I sure miss my shifter.

SHOULD HAVE GOT A SIX SPEED!!!!

I do and shift down or up. When Iam going down a hill I take it out of OD and down shift.

Down shifting manually will shorten the life of your trans unless you have some type of manual valve body. I sometimes upshift manually but never downshift unless absolutely necessary. Shifting from OD to 3rd is probably OK....

Brakes are cheap and easy to replace.

Auto trannys are expensive and difficult to replace.
