You have a three speed in that 1997?

I got a three speed 727 Torqueflight in my truck...

I'm still trying to figure out exactly how good of a tranny it is... I've heard that the engine goes through them like clockwork, then I've heard that they are tough as nails... Only nails that rust through every month, I guess.

What is the bottom line on these Torqueflights? I guess they don't last long, but are strong while they do? Or they last as long as you maintain them, but the stock torque converters are something awful?

They seem to hold together for a long time, as long as the truck remains stock.

I used to build quite a few torqueflites and beef them. They are easy to beef. If you get the 2 1/2 inch band and drum to match it you will have five clutches in the third shift. The only weak spot then is the sprague clutch in the back that is used when in drive, using low eliminates it for heavy pulling. There used to be any number of shafts and planetaries available to beef them. They would hold a hemi on the strip, they are pretty tough.

Yip had that go in our 68 Station wagon with a mild 383. Heavy car. They make a bolt in one now, When I rebuild the tranny for the wagon I'll put that in it.

I know nothing about automatic transmissions, so does anybody know where I can get any aftermarket pieces or get some work done? Is it possible to do the work by yourself? What could a worked-over 727 hold? You say a Hemi, which is something like 500 HP and 500 foot pounds of torque? It's torque that kills trannies, and 500 foot pounds isn't much when you start looking at the Cummins... Still, you do say strip Hemi's, which could could pull 1000 foot pounds with drugs...


And how does the TC factor into the equation?
