I am sorry, it appears my signature info isn't posting visibly so, I will sign in the specifics at the end of this.

I have a question regarding maintence etc. I bought my 97 12V 2500, 2WD about 3 months ago with 184,000 on it. After I bought it and read posts here, I did the KDP, changed that tranny fluid, did front brakes, valve cover gasket, adjusted the valves, changed the coolant. This past Thursday, I just had a complete hose set of Mr. Bob's hoses installed.

I am changing the oil every 5K miles and I now have 189,000 on the truck. The front end seems to be holding up okay, no death wobble to speak of at this time.

The shop I take it to is really trying to get me to upgrade the stock air filter to a BHAF. I am a bit nervous to do that because I am concerned that altering it from stock may not be the best aspect for the engine life/reliability, what do you all think ??

Is there any other items that you guys can think of that at this mileage sometimes get overlooked or become problem areas maintence wise???

I just want to make sure I take as good care of it as possible, and don't get stranded.

Nope sounds good since u did the valves, maybe get the timing checked and adjusted if u want, u can gain some milage and smoothness if it's slipped over the years.

Grab urself a BHAF, it filters better than the stock one, and should breath alot better, ur engine will like it.

Death wobble usually only applies to 4wd. For your sig, go to options (I think) and check the box that says to show your sig.

Do you frequently tow/haul loads of more than 4ton ?? Unless you do ,With a stock set-up all your doing is spending money w/ no benefit when you go the full flow filters route. Cummins tested K&N several years ago and found they did flow more cfm but did not filter small particles as well as a stock filter . Amsoil makes a stock replacement filter that purports to get smaller particle size than stock . If you will be towing , a set of boost , EGT and Tranny temp gages will be useful , some would say mandatory . The fuel tank sending unit will likely go south on you sometime . It doesnt usually break it just pulls the pivot arm away from pot contact and thus can be fixed . But getting to it is a PITA . An Owners Manual and Service Manual are also very handy for both maintenance and repair projects .

The OEM box has shown to produce higher HP numbers than the BHAF. We did dyno testing a few years back on several difeerent filter setups and the AFE Mega-Cannon was the winner. Heck even a straight velocity stack and no filter produced the same HP as the AFE unit. The TDR staff did an article on air filter units and came to the same conclusion, the BHAF actaully decreases HP. Now we are not talking a lot here, in the range of 4-8 RWHP. There are several good air filtration units on the market but the ones that actually produce HP are few.

Interesting observations Don...

makes me wonder why, if the stock airbox seems to restrictive.... perhaps road running, and stationary dyno pulls make a severe difference in the HP as well?

makes me wonder (being the science geek I am) what about 1/4 mile times with the BHAF and the stock airbox?

The least of your worries is the death wobble with a 2WD. I'm still running the original ball joints, tie rod ends, steering box, etc, etc. I've never had a re-alignment and get better than 120k miles out of my front tires without fail. Enjoy your new toy. Oh, and for what it is worth, I use an AFE proguard 7 stage 1.
