Maintanance schedule
Hi Just got back from dealer and was surprised when i was told i need an oil change every 3 months or 12000kms per schedule B is this normal?Nowhere in my owner;s manual does it say 3 months for schedule B.It does say 6 months for schedule A or 12.000kms.
I don't do short trips where engine does not get to full op temperture.
Hardly any idling
no dusty conditions
not much trailer towing ect.
I can't find this 3 month stipulation for schedule B in my manual can anyone verify this.Or can i get my money back for an oil change i may not have needed.
While i'm at it can i do my own oil changes with out voiding my warranty
Thanx in advance

I'm with you. Starting with the 04.5 600, the schedule was doubled. My manual is from a 04 and it states 3500 for schedule B and 7500 for schedule A, but the literature states 15,000 mile oil changes and the salesman echoed that (and we all know we can trust them). Plus, I sent in a sample at 12,500 miles and the stuff was still good, and that was even before I switched to Redline Syn. or installed the Frantz oil cleaner.

What the service manager sa9id to me was 3 months regardless of the mileage for schedule B.I find this fishy as the 3 month stipulation is not in my owners manual.

Also, I change oil and filter every 5k miles. Got 50k miles on truck now and no oil related problems.

all 3rd gen [HPCR engines] HOs from '03 and up have a 7500/15000 mile oil change schedule [per Cummins web]. There has been discussions from Canada folks on the RV.net forum that their owners manual didn't read as the USA version to show the higher milage schedule. I use the 7500 schedule when towing my 11200 lb 5er and 15000 schedule on my 110 + mile a day commute.

Don't believe it was 04.5 that changed the schedule. It was 04, and only if not the California engines which were 3k miles oil changes. The other 49 state engines are A = 15k or B = 7500 miles. There's a little Cross-looking icon in the owners manual (04 models). The icon is for California engines.
The 3k line is the dealerships way of getting upwards of $70 to change your oil every 3k miles. Dodge Country in Killeen TX tried the same baloney with me!

Regardless of the dealer getting more money for 3k oil changes, is it hard on the engine to change oil that often? Can you change oil too often in a CTD? I have an '03, and move constantly, so am always encountering different environments. We live in a huge fiver, and every time we move we tow the trailer with us. It works out to about 50% towing mileage wise with a 16K+ fiver behind the Dodge. I try to keep fresh oil in it because of all the changes the truck goes through.

I would switch to a good quality synthetic, Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil, etc. Install a bypass system and conduct UOA's. Since, from your signature, you've already modded your truck, you are your own warranty station anyhow.

I do all my own maintenance.
I have also had an issue getting warranty work done, but after talking to the DC rep he OK'd it. They flagged me just because I had gauges. In all the talking about why gauges, and did I have a box somewhere maintenance was never mentioned. I have parts reciepts and my own log book for maintenance. No one asked to see it (I'm still glad I've got it though).

3500 mile CA emissions engine only
My dealer told me every 3500 miles, so I took it in to them for the first one at about 4000 (it was free, done it myself ever since). It was a little later that I noticed the asterix in the maintenance schedule: "CA emissions engines only" or something like that. I've switched to 7,500 mile changes since then.
Moral of the story: Don't always believe the dealer

Rossn2...Are you referring to the guages, exhaust brake, and AFE? The exhaust brake was bought from and installed by a dealer in Idaho. The same dealer also approved and installed the guages for me. The AFE/Torque tube was bought from a dealer in California. I did install that myself. After much discussion with both dealers about keeping my warranty intact, both assured me that the mods would not affect my warranty. I do not have a box, nor do I plan on getting one untill the warranty does expire. In fact, several dealers I have been to gave me an "attaboy" for having the guages. They said they should come stock, but most people wouldn't know what they are for anyway.

Before the tables there's also a note saying, "Most vehicles are operated under the conditions listed for Schedule B".
Seems funny different owner's manuals for the same year truck can be so different?
I've always changed oil on my vehicles every 3000 miles (5000 km), but never had the expense of 12 quarts before, I'm not really sure how often I'm going to do it..¿
