Drove an 11 3500 SRW CC 4x4 "Outdoorsman". Big mistake. I'm on the precipice of needing a new truck. My '01 has only 140k on it but it's got some rust that NEEDS attention. The '11 was soooooooo nice... Oh so nice. But with a list of $53k and a tag of $47900 with incentives and rebates and such, they are showing me $3800 for mine. I know it's worth more than that but...

Oh man....

Issue is, it's not going to last me forever. Not up here. And in 7 years I'll have a son in college that I'll need to pay for and I don't want to be paying for a truck then. And he doesn't fit in the back of my '01 anymore either. And my wife isn't happy about sitting back there either.

How do you like the 3.42's? What rpm are you seeing in top gear at 60?

I like them, I got them in hopes for a little better mileage. I dont tow very heavy, so the reduced tow capacity wasnt a big deal.

I see 1600 rpm's @ 60mph.

That's a good number I'd say. The one I looked at had 3.73's in it.

Those are all valid issues. If you want a new truck, go for it.

Find a 04 or in that body and save yourself some cash.. New is nice but sounds like its either a new truck or a kid in school.. ask him if he minds waiting a few years till the truck is paid off.. Dare ya to ask him that in front of your wife too.. Mine would kick my arse.

No. Kid's got 7 years or so before he gets into college age. So getting a truck now means it'll be paid for by the time he gets there. And it'll be 7 years old instead of 10-13 years....

I would say go for it, I love my 2010 it's stock except for larger tires. It's the best truck I have ever owned and I have owned a few. Very comfortable, pulls like crazy, mileage about 17 to 18 mpg, and I really like the styling. The price they are quoting is way out of line, I am hearing up to $10,000 discounts in some areas and they really low-balled your trade. Definately want to check out some other dealerships.

Make the kid pay for his own, it will make him appreciate it more. My parents have made me pay for almost everything since I was 15-16, cars, insurance school, clothes, etc. Made me a better person, taught me the value of the dollar and taught me to work hard and save for what I wanted. I will graduate from college(alittle late, 26 years old, couldn't decide what I wanted to be) and will have saved as much as most kids have in debt, and with no help from my parents, that said they have helped me in other ways, let me stay on there health insurance and car insurance until I was 25.

Not trying to rain on a parade and God knows I love new trucks, but if you're really wanting to make the most of everything, put away a truck payment $500+ every month for the next 2 years into a stock that pays a dividend while you continue to drive your old truck. It will make it 2 more years and you're not losing value in the old truck like you will in the new truck. In 2 years, then if you still want one, buy a new one. It will give you a 5 year old truck when the college bills come and lets the money work the power of interest for the next 7 years instead of the last 2 before college. Emotion aside, that's the practical answer as much as I hate to say it.

So, when I was out on Tuesday I swung up by Darlings Chrysler Dodge and drove this really nice 2011 Ram 1-ton crew cab long bed single rear wheel 4x4 diesel. Very nice truck. I need to replace mine. Never considered going new and the price of this thing would scare you (it scared me!) But of course the salesman wanted to "work up some numbers". Yeah we weren't even close to what we could afford. Told him I needed to talk to my wife, do the math, discuss it, etc etc etc..... So i come home and find a number that I think we could live with. It was a low-ball number but I emailed the salesman Wednesday late afternoon. Haven't heard back from him. Is that was passes for car salesmen now? Not even a courtesy "Thanks for the offer but we just can't do that.." or "Thanks for getting back to me. We really couldn't get that low but..." And the fact is, I've got some wiggle room.

And it's the end of the month.

Several of the dealers I went to during my truck shopping were rude, acted like they didnt want my business and they didnt get it !
I paid a little bit more for the same optioned truck to deal with someone that wanted my business.

The salesman called me this morning, not an hour after posting this. Said he wanted me to bring my truck in again, their "truck guy" was in the office. So I did. They upped the trade 4k and we were closer. I had a meeting to go to at noon so he suggested I take the new one. So I drove around for a few hours with the new one.
We ended with within a deal-making margin and they beat my credit union's rate by a point. Got the deal were I made up my mind I would be comfortable. PIcked the 5/100 bumper to bumper no deductible.
She's a beauty.... As quiet inside as my wifes 2001 BMW 525 at 65.

The salesman was very genial, friendly and wanted to make the deal work.
