Mach 3.8's and towing

Hi guys. My first post here. I have an 01.5 HO and would like to pull our trailer(about 10K). I have done the following: Rips exhaust, and 3.8 F1 injectors. I used to have a catcher, but it died and I had to go back to stock. I have gauges, mag hytecs, and a trans cooler. My truck has the 3.42's in it but I also have 35" tires. I can yank the trailer around, but I have to be VERY careful as egts will climb high quickly.

I live in Colorado and everything is straight up or down from here. I would like to stay away as much as possible from electronic adders. I realize this will be difficult. I curently run the F1's in the truck and it is great. Again, it gets hot fast.

I have considered a new turbo, although I am out of touch with the newer turbos. I have considered a cam as well and I think both the cam and turbo would be great coupled together. I realize I would be better served with 4.10 to 4.88 gears as well. I am looking for useful power and effeciency as well as longevity.

I talked with Rip at sourceautomotive and he said that I should be running ~30 psi. I cannot get over ~24 psi. Never have. I wonder if my wastegate still functions as stock even though I have an adj. elbow in place. I also have a con fe and arp studs in the garage waiting for an opprotunity to fix something that isn't broke (yet).

Please help with your opinions. Thanks, Eric
Sorry for all the info.

How are you boost fooling? I went from 75 horse injector to 115 on a hx35-40 and the ability to tow without heat went away. It seems like anything over 100 injectors makes it hard to keep the heat down unless you have twins. 3.42 gears, this must be a two wheel drive?

No boost fooling now. It won't make over 24psi. It acts as though the wastegate has the stock hard elbow in it. Its 4X4. My bad. 3.55s

If you do not have any electronic unit to fool the computer, you will NOT make any boost because the computer will defuel automatically. You need a simple boost fooler to make the most of your injectors. Even a Edge EZ would work and give you more power.

The stock HX-35 will be safe to 35 psi of boost.

Those sticks and your final gearing is killing you. A turbo will only help slightly as you'll never be in the RPM range that you can take full advantage of it. Well, you can always drop a gear to help out.

Best thing to do would be add an EZ as mentioned above. This will help with low boost smoke, add a little timing for cooling and give you boost fooling. This would also help a larger turbo to get the job done and you're economy may increase slightly.

I would go with a smaller tire or a gear change. A cam is last on the list of mods to make and it's not gonna help as much as the hype for your combo. Again, the gearing and the altitude is your issue.

If you want to run those sticks go with BD twins and some spray of methanol, its gonna be hot a few of the steep hills, nothing but twins will save you on those steep grades. I would back down to mach 1.6 or 2's on a S362 or S364 turbo and tow heavy. I run a garrett 3782R, with DDP stage 3 sticks, PDR cam and spearco intercooler, pulling my 32ft trailer in the prairies of canada, I can see 1200 deg's, which isn't bad. I like relaxing when I tow and do other things than watch the pyro. Another good combo is decent sized twins with a set of BD125's, engine coolant temps will still get ya, but egt's are decent.

Agreed. A gearing change would make the biggest difference as well as boost fooling. I had the same boost with the catcher as well. With or without the bigger injectors. Is there some kind of resistor or something that I can run inline with the sensor to change the boost? What diff gears should I use with my 35s that would amount to having 4.10 and a stock tire size? I don't see running this thing over 80 empty anyway, and I could always use a gear vendors unit in the future right?

I would just go with 4:10's if you are going to do a gear swap. Anything lower than that will really have you screaming at higher MPH.

Put an Edge EZ on that thing. An EZ cant hurt anything. It wont kill your pump, or ECM, and it just plugs right in in 5 minutes. It will give you some timing, and should help with the heat a decent bit just because of that.

That said, if it is still too hot, and you arent looking for any extra power anyways, then take the injectors out, and leave the EZ on it. I think you would find that you cant even get your EGT's past 1200* or so, and it will pull great. My cousin had one on his 24v 5 speed, and he couldnt get it hot pulling a load, but it still ran good. The EZ is hard to beat for towing, and for the $$ they cost.

I figure going to 4.10s with my 35s would be like towing stock tires with 3.55s or there abouts. I suppose you are right about the EZ. I've seen a few in classifieds on sale for those who are upgrading. So what do you think, Gears (4.10) Rips 2/3 twin kit uilizing the stock turbo, and some sort of a box. Who's box is best?

You are opening a can of worms asking who's box is best. A lot of people like the adrenaline, but i think the old tried and true Edge comp is hard to beat.

I understand that people are fond of their choices in hardware and made those choices for a good reason. I have PLENTY of fuel with the injectors. A simple box that allows me to run with boost fooling and possibly some timing would be something for me to look at. I used the catcher as previously stated, and the power was great. I don't thing going thru the ecm is the best route anymore as I have already lost that ecm. If I can bypass the ecm maybe that is a better option. Maybe not. I really don't know which is why I was asking for opinions.

I want my truck to be powerful and reliable to a fault. I'm not looking for all out horsepower as I only need the truck and camper to be able to get out of its own way in a hurry if I have to. Otherwise, it will just loaf around as if it were stock, which is how I drive, nice and easy...most of the time. The truck used to be a daily driver and now it is relegated to trips to the range, Lowes, camping and hunting. It's on its third tank since Jan 09.

I'm going to try and find someone who wants to swap gears and lsd carrier. My 3.55s for their 4.10s. I'll probably go with Timbren bags in the back as well as they have a descent reputation, no air lines and a lifetime warranty. I'll then see if there is a box that I can boost fool with and see how egts are and then possibly get a 14cm housing for the stock turbo. If that is not enough, I'll use the stock turbo with one of Rips 2/3s twin kits and THAT should be good enough! Let me know what you all think. Thanks Eric

Update. Had the ecm cleared. Had an overboost code that wouldn't allow me to run above 22psi. No CEL. Called Rip and he is sending a BD boost fooler only. Should be here tomorrow. Will allow more boost for hopefully a bit cooler temps. If boost is a whole lot more, I'll put in the ARPs. had the codes cleared and tire size altered at Pueblo Diesel Injection. Nice guys, good work. Will let you allknow. Thanks, Eric

Run a comp box or TST box that wire taps the pump. The extra ump will suprise you. I tow a little 32ft trailer fifth wheel. My current set-up works really nice. You'll need more turbo to tow with 3.8 mach's than stock. Thats almost twins territory. Mach 1.6's works really nice for towing as well.

Dumb question, you running the catcher ecm? That should have boost fouler and timing already added into the ecm program. If you want to run that ecm, you can use the ez, as it doesn't add timing advance as the comp box does.

TST just adds more fuel. That's not gonna help him.

He stated he fried a Catcher ECM, and he's running a stocker now. It is also incorrect that the EZ does not add timing. It adds timing just like the comp.

I have ran a comp box for the last six-seven years. I like it and haven't had the need to change. I do have a drag box sitting on shelf in the garage. I always rather have the extra muscle during towing. I've towed with an ez, but passing is sluggish. I want to be able to tow and pass quickly, we have lots of slow trucks/car around here. Just cause I tow, doesn't mean that I have to do the speed limit.
