LP pressure loss when tank is low???

This has happened before, but I never thought anything of it. When my tank gets under 10 gallons (registering just under 1/4 tank), the fuel pressure gauge begins to drop. It did this to me the other day when I pulled into my driveway. I normally run around 13 @ idle ... I was at 8! I later ran out and got fuel, which put the gauge back to normal. I usually don't run her past empty, so it's not a common problem. My last pump did the same thing, so I replaced it (kept it as a spare). I only had 10k on that pump and this one only has around 2k ... anyone ever experience this? Any ideas what might be the problem ... pickup, maybe?

Time for a Walbro?

Yup, it has to pull the fuel higher and you are gonna loose pressure. Another good reason to keep the tank full.

Do they have the Walbro kit ready yet? How much is it and how long is the warranty?

you could have some issues with the tank module, a crack, the float jobbie not floating right, anything like that. I have seen trucks that went haywire at 1/4 tank and it was the tank module....nothing a little rethinking can't fix.

I know what you mean, this truck has had 6 lift pumps on it. The first one died at 42000, the second at 80000 and the last 4 have not made it past the 6 month warrenty that comes with the junk pumps. I am not buying another one, Is their a fix to this dilema. What is this fass system and does it solve the problem. Is their any hope of having to not worry about being stranded by a junky fuel system. This new one has 1500 miles on it and already has lost pressure, It is down to 9 at idle. Sorry for hijacking the thread, but when i seen somebody else that can't get no mileage out of one just had to say something. I checked the dtr store for a cure but it looks like the scotty system uses the same crappy pump, and i want to get away from that. Please you guys that have solved the problem let us know what to do. Thanks and sorry for the rant just tired of replacing a junk pump every month or two. The truck itself has been flawless, No problems at all except regular maintenance.

FASS http://www.dieselinjection.net/fass/

It's a bit pricey, but it works. I'm looking at doing the Walbro upgrade. Do a search and you'll find plenty of info.

I'm not sure if it's the pump; when I shut the truck down and restart the fuel pressure goes back to normal. Any ideas???

I know, install a Walbro and be finished with the problems! Just need to find me a couple of hundred dollars for a regulator and pump. I know, you don't need the regulator, but I want it!

It's possible with the symptoms you describe that it is an issue in the pickup module in the tank as mentioned before. Or you may need to replace your fuel filter. Especially with the setup you already have (relocated pump and larger lines). I have a similar setup to you and my pressure is very stable from full to E on the gauge. I'd say run it down to E and drop the tank and check it out. Your pump may be just fine. It could be a float issue, or just crap / gunk on the silk screen at the bottom of the pickup. Could be bio-gunk too. Warmer climates sometimes fosters the growth of algae on this silk screen. But this, IMO, is less likely your cause than something else in the pickup module.

You can lift the bed or drop the tank. I dropped the tank with only about 3-4 gallons left on mine one time and it was not that difficult. Just used tie straps and lowered it, disconnected the feed and return lines and such, and continued lowering it front to back a bit at a time until I could get access to what I wanted.

Just in case you haven't seen these, this is what you will see in the pickup module if you decide to do this. These pics are not mine, but I refer to them often.

How much is a new module? Can you get an aftermarket unit? Maybe I'll purchase a replacement and modify it before pulling the old one ... just an idea!

I do not know what it costs for a replacement module. I have not replaced mine. Some have tweaked the float to fix their gauge issues in the cab when the gauge would read E well before it should have. I have also read about those with gunk on the silk screen and they cleaned it manually I believe. Both ended up just re-using their module.

It's ultimately just a theory. I was also thinking so I'll ask... do you have a pre-filter on your frame mounted pump. This could be a culprit too. Is the line between the tank and the pump inlet new? Check for kinks maybe.

Good luck with this.

The line is new and no filter. I have a loop in the rubber line from the old steel line to the LP, since the lines did not match up. I don't think that would cause any problem since it's a smooth loop. I'm thinking "Carter" is the problem!

Ok ... I'm done ... Ford, here I come! This is the third LP in under 15K!!!! Dropped to 7psi on the way home and is jumping back and forth. I refuse to invest another $400 on an upgraded LP!!!
