Lower than expected HP #'s. Help Please.
Good evening everyone. My friend's truck seems to be suffering from a lack of power. Don't get me wrong, the truck works and runs perfectly. It's just with all of the mods done to this truck the power output numbers I posted seem a lot lower than my friend and I expected when he dyno'd the truck a few weeks ago. (I know, I know, They always are. ) We were expecting some where around 450hp and 1000 lbs/ft of torque. Are these numbers too opimistic from the mods? He uses this truck as his daily driver and also does some sled pulling 5-6 times a year, running in either the local diesel class or what is called the pro-street diesel class up here(depends on what classes are offered that night).
The truck works really nice on the street. Sets you back in the seat, shifts nice and crisp, egts in check at around 1300, just a short haze of smoke of the line then it clears right up. The biggest disappointment comes when it's hooked to the sled. Truck does alright, doesn't get to hopping and bouncing, just seems to come up short powerwise and the dyno sheet shows that. He doesn't have a fuel pressure gauge on it nor a rail pressure gauge(both of which I told him we need to verify before throwing anything else at it).
I would just like everyones input on why our my mind it seems short on power. I'm also thinking that he should stack a Smarty with the X-Power Plus, or, stack a Smarty with something else(????). Or.............?
Post away everyone, we greatly appreciate everyone's input and any help that you can provide.
Details of the truck at hand are in my signature. If you'd like any other specific info please don't hesitate to ask and I will answer the best I can.

One thing that jumps out at me is the BD X-Power Plus. I have tried in the past to find info on what it does/how it works and there was very little. I lked it because it was different, but the lack of info kept me away. A fuel system upgrade like a FASS or a Glacier Diesel might very well be needed too.

I don't know much about that chip so may be all it is capable of but looks like you have addressed some air flow issues. With my TST and slipping clutch was 390ish hp and 800ft/lbs. I added an AFE, GDP lift pump and a duel disk to hold it with just the TST did 409 hp and 875 ft/lbs. I need an upgraded turbo. My take on it from reading many forums post would be if the lift pump is stock with those injectors it would need to be replaced. And from personal expeirence a lift pump will help thottle repsonse and help ensure a longer injector pump life. then a more aggressive box. I love my TST for 100k mile now. From what i read about the bigger injectors and agressive box, you may want to look down the road at upgraded injection pump as you may be draining the rail with those injectors.

You dynoed on a Mustang with a truthful run so you will be about 50hp lower then on a dynojet with the same mods.
Another thing that is holding the truck back in your signature is the enemic turbo the 03 cummins is supplied with.
With an 04.5-06 5.9L a Smarty, TST, and FASS will put down over 500rwhp. I have seen it with my own two eyes.

My truck completely stock (with an Edge EZ on level 4) and 1500 miles on it dyno'd at 326hp/618tq.. on a mustang dyno.... I am not bragging by any means (it seemed very typical numbers), but you have alot more going for you to only see those HP numbers.... I would first try another box (borrow one from a friend)... Then look at possible fueling issues if the box doesn't help...

A fuel system and a Smarty, or TST, or both will completely change the way the truck runs. You really need a rail pressure gauge to see if the CP3 (even with the fuel system) can keep up with those bigger injectors and box.

I have similar mods on a 03HO.
First off dont expect a 03 to run along side a 04.5+. Newer truck's have alot more going for it and put down some dang good numbers. 03's...not so much.
Second would be that he's not running more common mods. You're not going to find too many members running around with an entire Doge BD line up of parts like your friend. Most of us mix and match our parts based on experience.
I dont think fuel is its major problem because his numbers are so low. I'd like to see a graph. Usually the truck will fall of on the top end when fuel runs out, but it should be near 400hp with the stock fuel system.
I would definetly reccomed a lift pump. I suprised since he bought the entire BD line of parts they didnt reccomend a fuel upgrade....well maybe im not
I would definetly get a lift pump upgrade and change the electronics to something more power proven, and find a different dyno
I have a 03 with smarty and larger turbo and put down 400hp all day. Stock fuel system, stock clutch

I think I have talked him into the Quadzilla rail pressure gauge, a FASS system and a Smarty/TST combo. Which TST product would be the best? The http://www.tstproducts.com/index.asp...WPROD&ProdID=4 or the http://www.tstproducts.com/index.asp...ROD&ProdID=135

I'd hold off on spending the $800 on the TST for now.
A Smarty with added pressure should give you all the power you crave.
Most guys that are stacking with a TST and going for big HP and have tried many combos and settings.
Just get a Smarty and add pressure via mp-8, EZ, beta and you will be 450+ hp if you still feel the need for more like 500+ then and only then spend the $800 on the TST + more $$$ for more supporting mods and buy alot a dyno time to get the settings right to hit your goal.
FASS are really nice if you have the $$$ but if I already had the BD set up id run it until I found that it was hurting my performance.
Heck if he has that much $$$ then tell him to buy a 05 w/ a built auto and have 600hp everyday
P.S his numbers look a little strange for a 3rd gen....340hp with 900tq

You can make power with a 03. I would try some different box's on it. Some of these trucks like different things. I dont know anything about the box you are running. The stock cp3 seems to come up short in the 500+ range. That has been the way it has been going for me and some friends.

ive seen a local 03 so 5spd put down 525 on the dyno with a turbo ,tst/ats downloader stacked. that was with a stock fuel system on a dynojet dyno.
my 06 put down 461 on that same dyno with only a smarty for power .
it all depends on the dyno you are on. I came up short of 500 a couple weekends ago and ive gotta be over 500
