Low Idle When Warm
Hi Guys. I have noticed a difference in the truck the last couple of weeks. When she is warmed up and I shift into drive, reverse or when she idles at a stoplight or something....the truck idles really low. It idles so low that a blue haze can be seen coming out of the tail pipe. The exhaust has smelled kinda bad for a little while now...like it is burning a little oil now. The stock temp. guage doesn't show high engine temps. It has been pretty warm up here in WI for about the last month. Does the heat affect it that much or is there a deeper issue?

1st, when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? But it really sounds like a worn pump and/or dirty worn injetors.I (and several other folks) have been down the low idle/worn pump road. You could try running some Power Service (or the like) to help clean any crud from the injectors...might help.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=291363 https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=292119 Yup, It's been discussed and a common problem. The answer is given by Wannadiesel in my thread, if you really want to know why ..
Seems as though the pump internal wears out and it needs to be rebuilt. Will last a couple of years or so, though.

The thought of a bad IP had crossed my mind and hearing it from you guys makes me think that is the problem. Chris....I changed the fuel filter this past spring as I though it might solve the problem of bad fuel economy...which it kind of did. The truck only has 89,000 original miles on the stock motor. I would love to tear into it but going to college puts me in a bind for funding. Does a bad VE though explain the oil usage....cause it is noticeable in the exhaust smell.
